I know you’ve probably been asked this a bunch, but do you have any faceup tips for beginners? Mine tend to come out lumpy sometimes. Do i need to water down the paint more and be more patient?
Basically yea, you need a lot of thin layers to avoid the lumps, however I would recommend getting mid tier or higher grade acrylics too. Avoid student acrylic paint if you can and go for artist grade acrylics.
The reason why I recommend this is that cheaper acrylic paint, when watered down to a smooth consistency does not have enough pigment to look good and no matter how good your skillset is, you can’t make cheap acrylics look less lumpy without making it streaky and spotty.
A huge setback for me when I started out using only cheap acrylics, all the tips artists had for me simply didn’t work cuz no matter how I watered acrylic paint down, the paint puddled, or was streaky or lumpy or spread weirdly. I STILL can not get straight lines if I use cheap acrylics.
Artist grade paints though, when thinned down, is a lot more opaque and requires much less layers so you minimise the risk of lumps.
I know no one can just start over but I do recommend at least in investing in an artist grade white acrylic paint that you can mix in with your cheaper paints, and slowly upgrading your other colours to artist grade.
My core acrylic colours are white, black, red oxide, pthalo blue and cadium yellow if I’m just doing natural face ups since these colours can mix pretty well for natural looks. I also recommend investing in cadium red, magenta and cyan if you’re aiming for more saturated colours (or purples).
Also when I do face ups I keep my hairdryer nearby to speed up the drying time cuz I find waiting can impede on my creative flow.
Anyway hope this helps in some way.
