Weeds of Boise: Boise State University Campus, part two
In part one of this two part series, I introduced you to the Boise State University campus, located in the heart of Boise, Idaho. I’ve been spending the past year walking the campus and cataloging the weeds that I find there. Boise has a fairly mild climate compared to the rest of Idaho, so weeds are generally easy to find just about any time of year. What weeds are present depends on what time…

The sixty-seventh card of the Tarot is associated with the season of Winter. Earth + air. This is an energy of physical slowing down or stillness, contemplation and reflection. It’s a time for taking stock, pondering- becoming aware of cycles- yet being fully in the moment. It’s growing in insight and wisdom. It’s an enjoyment of the material comforts and pleasures that have been accumulated. It’s living on reserves that were harvested in the Fall. It’s a bit of a bear hibernating, some butterfly in a cocoon. Reset, restore, recuperate, reserve. Gather energy in preparation for a new outward burst of growth come Spring. It’s deciding where one wants to direct that drive when the time arrives. Knights are associated with youth, adolescence, young adulthood, and potential quantum leaps in learning.
The bull represents sturdiness, groundedness and peace. Puncture vine is a symbol of community, support and resilience. It’s linked to Mars (hot + dry/head, muscular system, blood, immune system, libido). It’s used to treat a variety of health issues, including increasing energy and athletic performance, boosting levels of testosterone and therefore libido and muscle mass. It can also help address kidney stones, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Awkward Botanical Sketches #4: Boise Goathead Fest Edition
Covid-19 be damned, Boise Goathead Festis happening in 2020. However, since we’re in the middle of a pandemic and the number of infections in Idaho have been far greater than we’d like them to be, this beloved, summertime event (now in its third year) is going to look quite a bit different this time around. No giant bicycle parade snaking through downtown Boise, no big gathering in the park to…

Scenes From My Walk - Puncture Vine AKA Goat’s Head - it looks innocuous now but in the Autumn and all through the Winter the burs it leaves behind commonly called Goat’s Head because of the bur’s shape get stuck in just about anything that walks, rolls or runs over it. I pulled 10 or more out of my shoes every walk last Autumn. “Tribulus terrestris is an annual plant in the caltrop family (Zygophyllaceae) widely distributed around the world. It is adapted to grow in dry climate locations in which few other plants can survive. It is native to warm temperate and tropical regions in southern Eurasia and Africa. It has been unintentionally introduced to North America and Australia. An aggressive and hardy invasive species, T. terrestris is widely known as a noxious weed because of its small woody fruit – the bur – having long sharp and strong spines which easily penetrate surfaces, such as bare feet or thin shoes of crop workers and other pedestrians, the rubber of bicycle tires, and the mouths and skin of grazing animals.” - Wikipedia #ScenesFromMyWalk #PunctureVine #GoatsHead #Burs #TribulusTerrestris #InvasiveSpecies #DeceptivelyPretty #YellowFlowers (at Santa Fe, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgK6j7JrJAV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Scenes From My Walk - Relentless Puncture Vine AKA Goat’s Head It seems to just keep growing. New flowers turn into seed pod burs that stick to anything going over it. Scenes From My Walk - Beware Puncture Vines - Sneaky plant spreads out over the sidewalk so people will step on the seed pods with spines, often called goat’s-heads for their supposed similarity to the animal’s head. They stick to shoes, tires, birds and animals and spread like, well, weeds. #ScenesFromMyWalk #PunctureVine #GoatsHead #Beware #NoBareFeetHere (at Agua Fria, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUA2cxNv3s3/?utm_medium=tumblr
