punnet, n.
This word, meaning a small basket or container, usually to hold berries (often plastic in modern times), is of uncertain origin, first appearing in the written record in 1822.
There are two main theories of origin. One is that it arises from English pun (meaning "pound - a unit of weight") plus the diminutive suffix -et (from French -ette of the same meaning). This is the most commonly accepted etymology, although there is no direct evidence for it.
The other theory is based on the writings of F.A.E. Crew in the Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, Volume 13, page 309, published in 1967. He states:
In the 18th century a member of the family [of Reginald Crundall Punnett (1875–1967), English geneticist], a grower of strawberries, among other things, invented and gave his name to the small chip basket in which he sent his produce from Bromley to the London market.
As this evidence is anectodal, however, it has not been widely accepted as a valid etymology for the word.

En este caso, Mendel no conforme con el hallazgo de la 1ra. y 2da. Ley se pregunta que pasaría si hiciera los mismos cruzamientos de la 1ra. y 2da., pero teniendo en cuenta 2 características al mismo tiempo, ¿daría eso los resultados esperados de combinar lo que ocurría con cada característica por separado?
