To know of those around you

Is to know inside yourself

Knowledge building power

Creating opportunities

Tearing down walls left too long standing

Uniting families stronger than blood

Bonds that strengthen through the pain

Journeys of heartbreak and sorrow

Searching for an identity

But only through eyes wide open

May we witness the beauty

Buried beneath countless layers

Of tradition and avoidance

Now is the time to truly see

Oh, the humanity

Looks that made others fawn

Now send them screaming in terror

The hopes and dreams of the past

No longer compatible with the future

Close friends whose hearts once held

Seem farther away than the distance sun

Love is that voice in your head telling you that you are beautiful

Even when you don’t want to believe it

Love is that hand within yours walking down the street

Or beside you while you face your deepest fears

Love is the taste of rich chocolate melting on your tongue

Savory and sweet wrapped into one

Love is the aroma of home wafting from the oven

Inviting you to sit and unload your day

Love is a litter of puppies in your room

Excitable and willing to love anyone who pays attention

Words, Thoughts, Fears

I wrote some words on a page

Words I was proud of in the solitude of the night

But will be scared to judge by daylight

Do I dare to let my words run free

Or do I keep them isolated in my world

Is it safe to open the doors to my thoughts

Or will they be slammed shut and marked condemned

Can I allow my definition of beauty to join the masses

Or can it only survive in my own mind

Thoughts swirling through my head

Calmed only by your presence

Time together not so previously cherished

Now guarded and awaited

Words flowing more freely than ever

Even if still held back by a weakening force

Stories etched in calcium

In a language only few know

The earliest form of recorded history

Incapable of lying or bias

But often difficult to decipher

Trauma and recovery hidden within

Exposed when the journey is over
