Being Woke...

Being woke is a term 

certain people see as negative, 

but to me it is the opposite,

being woke is a positive,

The definition states

that woke means the following:

“being aware and attentive

to important facts and issues, 

especially those related 

to race and social justice.”

If that's the definition, 

then being woke is not a slur, 

it proves that you are human,

it proves that you care

In a world full of hate

being woke is what will save us,

for i’d rather be woke,

than some hateful, right-wing, bigot  

Being woke is a term 

certain people see as negative,

it's time we changed this divisive narrative,

rather than being woke, let's be awake

To Learn about the World

To learn about the lives of those we see

Their joys and struggles, beliefs and ideals

The society created for us by those past

Morphing in hope of progress

New laws and campaigns

Seeking to humanize or to outlaw

The voices of the young

Preaching for education

To know of those around you

Is to know inside yourself

Knowledge building power

Creating opportunities

Tearing down walls left too long standing

Uniting families stronger than blood

Bonds that strengthen through the pain

Journeys of heartbreak and sorrow

Searching for an identity

But only through eyes wide open

May we witness the beauty

Buried beneath countless layers

Of tradition and avoidance

Now is the time to truly see
