Here the yellow flowered Cerinthe minor (lesser honeywort) is flowering together with the more dramatic Cerinthe major 'Purpurascens' (honeywort) with blue-green leaves and tubular purple flowers with purple bracts. These hardy annuals will self-seed making them great for filling gaps in borders early in the season, while the flowers are popular with the bees.

The purplish bracts of Monarda citriodora (bergamot) are providing a display at the front of a border whilst the white tubular flowers are providing pollen and nectar for the local bee population. This short-lived perennial is normally grown as an annual or biennial.

Even in autumn at Helmsley Walled Garden, Yorkshire, UK, the annual Salvia viridis (annual sage, clary, painted sage, orval) was providing some late season colour. The two-lipped cream flowers are insignificant but have colourful bracts borne on upright stems, these modified leaves can be blue, pink or white.
