Even in autumn at Helmsley Walled Garden, Yorkshire, UK, the annual Salvia viridis (annual sage, clary, painted sage, orval) was providing some late season colour. The two-lipped cream flowers are insignificant but have colourful bracts borne on upright stems, these modified leaves can be blue, pink or white.

Requiring plenty of space to perform Schizophragma integrifolium (Chinese hydrangea vine) needs a large tree or wall where the stems will attach by aerial roots. This vigorous, large deciduous climber produces inconspicuous flowers but these are surrounded by showy white ovate bracts.
