It was the early hours of the morning when Lia walked into her lady’s room to open the blinds and get a start on the day. She had been living at the castle as the handmaiden to the princess for a few months now. It wasn’t easy work, but Lia would be lying if she said that she didn’t enjoy it. It was great to get away from her past life, and the best part was that her father would not think to look here of all places. She was less likely to draw attention to herself if she was cooped up in the castle most days, and she wasn’t getting herself into trouble by stealing or spying on business dealings in taverns.
“It’s time to get up, my lady,” Lia murmured quietly to the princess. It was luck that she landed with Laurie as her lady, as she was very kind and great to talk to, which was not an experience she had expected when she got the job in the first place. Her father, the King, however, was definitely intimidating. Not as much so as her father, but Lia knew she was less likely to die at the hands of her father - being the only heir to the throne. Here, she wasn’t quite so safe.
