Although I didn’t make a new Puzzle Purse Valentine this year, I unearthed a handful of ones leftover from last year’s limited edition and they are now available in the shop at half-off their original price! This Victorian-inspired valentine, affectionately called the Love Spell Puzzle Purse, is a hand screen printed love note that unfolds in a spiraling pinwheel pattern, drawing your valentine deeper under your spell as they reveal more and more of the valentine. The “poem” is actually a love spell based on the ingredients and lore of medieval philtres (love potions) and love magic. Both sides are covered in original hand drawn sigils and symbols, furthering the magical quality of this special valentine. These were originally screen printed in a limited edition of 50 red and 50 gold. Upon their release last year, the red sold out immediately, however there are still 13 ✨GOLD✨ Puzzle Purses remaining from this limited edition, and I have made them available in the shop. The first opening of the Love Spell Puzzle Purse unfolds to reveal a pin-wheel star. The poem begins with an offering of three tokens for your valentine that are also popular ingredients in medieval love spells. (but your valentine doesn’t have to know that, right?) The poem continues on the inside to name further ingredients such as a dove’s heart, a cord knotted 9 times, beetle wings, and poisonous plants. The puzzle purse is designed in such a way that the reader must continuously turn the valentine to read the poem. A few more glimpses of The Love Spell Puzzle Purse Valentines hitting the shop this Friday at 12pm EST! Made popular during the Victorian era, the Puzzle Purse is a type of valentine that unfolds in a star-like pattern to reveal a special love note on the inside. These valentines were traditionally exchanged between lovers as intimate tokens of their devotion and, in addition to the written sentiment, often carried a lock of hair or pressed flowers inside. Unfolding in a hypnotic pinwheel-like pattern, opening a Puzzle Purse slowly revealed a love poem with the main sentiment written at the very heart of the note. In true Victorian fashion, this unfolding was viewed symbolically as the act of “opening your heart to love.” My Love Spell Puzzle Purse pulls from this romantic notion but puts a dark spin on the sentiment of love. Here’s the first look at The Love Spell Puzzle Purse Valentines! Hand drawn and screen printed in a limited edition of 100 {50 red and 50 yellow ochre}. These special love notes will be available a week from today on Friday 2/8 at 12pm EST (noon) exclusively at PoisonApplePrintshop.com. I screen printed these red ones right before I left for Tucson where I am currently soaking up some sun amongst glistening crystals. I’ll be screen printing the yellow ochre version when I return, just in time for the release. A quick throwback to the limited edition puzzle purse love notes from earlier this year! If an item is listed as ‘limited edition’ in my shop, it means that once it’s sold out, it will not be made again. As far as prints go, I often create a one-color (usually black) print after the limited edition has sold out. This allows the print to still be available but never again in it’s full, colorful glory. If an item in the shop is sold out but not listed as limited edition, it means I will eventually create more.
