Jayy had just resigned themself to a sleepless night when there was a knock at their bedroom door. “Yeah?” they called.

The door opened, and Harmony leaned against the frame. “The soundproofing isn’t as good as I’d like.”

Jayy let out a heavy sigh. “Noted. I’ll keep it down.” There was a pause, but Harmony didn’t budge. “Anything else?”

“You going to sleep tonight?”

“Harp, don’t—”

“Don’t tell me to leave it alone,” Harmony snapped. Jayy couldn’t help their wince, looking away.

Harmony sighed, and Jayy heard her footsteps crossing the room, then the bed dipped as she sat down. “Hey.”

“I’m fine Harp.” Jayy’s voice wasn’t as strong as they would have liked it to be.

“We both know that’s bullshit.”

Jayy hated how well she knew them.

“Look, Jayy.” Harmony reached out and brushed Jayy’s hair behind their ear. “I know we’re out in the middle of nowhere right now, and when I asked you to join me out here I swear it wasn’t with the intention of torturing you with lack of sleep.”

“I know.” And Jayy did know it wasn’t intentional, but there was always that little voice in the back of their head that said What if it is, she knows how to hurt you.

“So,” Harmony continued, reaching past Jayy to close their computer and set it aside, “will you let me make it up to you?”

“How?” Jayy turned to look at Harmony, only to find her giving them a knowing look. “Harp…”

“One night,” Harmony said. “Then tomorrow evening I’ll drop you off in town and you can seduce a pretty girl who doesn’t have our history into bed with you.”

“Doesn’t have to be a girl.”

Harmony raised an eyebrow. “Semantics, dear Jayy. So?”

Jayy couldn’t help but idly twirl a lock of Harmony’s hair around their finger, stalling an answer.

“I won’t leave.” Harmony’s voice had softened. “Not tonight. Not if you don’t want me to.” And Jayy knew her well enough to know she wasn’t lying.

“Okay. Just for tonight.”

They both knew that was a blatant lie, but to her credit Harmony didn’t point it out. Instead, she turned off the light with a wave of her hand, then pushed Jayy down and laid down on top of them.

“Human weighted blanket type of night?” Jayy asked dryly. Harmony huffed and rolled away, but Jayy tugged her back.

“Hey Harp?”

“Hm?”

Jayy buried their face in her hair to muffle the word. “Thanks.”

“Of course.”

I love you.

As they drifted off to sleep, Jayy wondered if they would ever be able to say those words out loud to her again.
