Say's Firefly (Pyractomena angulata), taken June 30, 2026, in Georgia, US
A small firefly resting calmly on the underside of a kudzu leaf, sheltering from the rising, scorching sun. I don't get to see this species very often, but they always look very cute and sleepy when I happen upon them! Like the rest of their genus, these guys light up once it gets pretty dark, about when the much more well-known common eastern firefly (Photinus pyralis) is ending its light show. They tend to live their adult lives in the trees, so it's uncommon to see them, but some will occasionally roost in the forest understory where people like me can find them. They look like they would make a nice pet if they were dog sized—that carapace is just asking to be petted!
