For the writing asks, 5 and/or 8? O:
Ooh, someone else just beat you to asking for 5, so I will do 8!
8. What’s your philosophy on writing romantic relationships?
I don’t know that I’d call it a “philosophy” but uhhh I really love writing them? It’s endlessly fascinating to figure out how two characters will react to each other, how their own personality quirks and histories will influence how they connect to each other and develop a relationship. Miscommunication happens! Sometimes people can’t say what they need to, for reasons both good and bad, and making characters work those things out can be really rewarding. Also like, characters are just going to approach romance differently depending on who they are. Some people are going to actively flirt with someone they’re into. Most of the characters I write some people will pine away and go to ridiculous lengths to not show their interest because they think the other person is too good for them, or not interested, or that bringing up the possibility of romance might ruin an established friendship. Characters who think “this friendship is so important to me, I value it too much to ruin it with my unrequited feelings” are catnip to me, I looooove writing them. I love getting them to the point where they can see that actually, they can have both, because friendship and romance are not mutually exclusive if the people involved are on the same page.
I also enjoy going straight for established relationships so I can write some sappy fluff, but those stories tend to have less of a plot and are more self-indulgent, haha. Sometimes I imagine those scenes in my head for characters whose “figuring things out” plot is still in the works...everyone deserves some cuddling after all the drama, even if I don’t end up writing all of those scenes.
(I feel I should also note that I also enjoy writing stories that are more focused on friendship or families or other kinds of relationships - those are also super important! But the bulk of my stories do involve romance in some form or another.)
