Terrible news. I started playing Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream last night on a whim, and when I needed to name my island I was like. "Well. How about I call it Townsboro." And now I'm filling it with all of my superhero/supervillain OCs and it works shockingly well for the whole "multiple identities, in-universe lore" thing. Everyone gets called by their cape name but when they become friends they unlock the secret identity name (or shortened version of the cape name). One of them wants me to suggest an activity to talk about with a person he wants to befriend (his in-universe nemesis/boyfriend) so they get to have a conversation about Robbing A Museum or Fighting A Nemesis. Mister Magnificent is a person to talk about because sure, why not, he can be famous outside of Oldport City.
Plus I have a lot of thoughts about how my various one-off hero/villain stories are actually connected, and plans for stories that will bring some of them together that I just haven't had the writing juice for yet. This gives me an opportunity to make that happen on a smaller, sillier level. So Vexation from Interrupted Heists is there because they're going to move to Townsboro for grad school. The couple from the coffee shop fic will get added eventually because I have decided grad student Sedge is at the same grad school. Once I get around to adding the crew from Operation: Boyfriend I can make them all talk about Bowling.
Anyway I'm having fun but hoo boy it's making it hard to sit around at my day job where playing games on my switch would be highly frowned upon. 😅
If you had to sing a child to sleep RIGHT NOW what would you sing and it CANT BE a lullaby it has to be a regular song
anyway the thing about Ratthi and Gurathin is that I could get behind them as a Thing but literally the only version that works for me is Gurathin being So Fucking Mad that he could bite through METAL because it's sooooo stupid that he did the Most Basic Thing imaginable and got a stupid lil crush on the Hot Nice Guy from work that everybody wants to fuck. oooooh wow Gurathin that guy is hot and nice and now you want to touch his junk about it??? groundbreaking. inspiring. idiot. obviously he'll be taking this to his grave. and meanwhile Ratthi's acting like the girl from a horse girl movie. going pspsps with lil sugar cubes. trying to lure Gurathin to his polycule board game night.
Ratthi isn't even doing it with Intent he just thinks Gurathin needs more enrichment but every time he's like oh hey wanna get a smoothie after work :) no pressure :) only if you're up for that haha :) Gurathin's going oh fuuuuuck he's trying to seduce me 🤬
and he knows the rules!!! he knows all of the weird rules and how to set up the board and what the weird little tokens are for and he's keeping track of points because he has to have a Task to alleviate the inherent mortification of being invited to your hot nice coworker's polycule board game night so now he's just. Gamemaster Gurathin. everyone loves him, invite him back!!! Ratthi thinks he's just discovered a previously untapped passion for game night that no one has ever figured out but Gurathin is in HELL. fighting for his life trying to keep track of the points in Sci-Fi!Wingspan and update his spreadsheet where he's trying to figure out how all of these people are involved with each other. Murderbot keeps hacking in to make annotations because its desire to watch Gurathin suffer slightly outweighs its distaste for romantic and sexual relations.
Murderbot isn't adding anything incorrect for the record it's just stressing Gurathin out with extra info. sliding in with shit like "you forgot to note that Variables Three and Seven have recently become romantic partners" and Gurathin's like "bullshit, they're both dating Variable Four but they're not involved with each other" and Murderbot goes "incorrect. they went on their first date this weekend. Ratthi is very excited for them and told me about it this morning. it was agony." and then Gurathin throws up
Perhelion and that secunit it stole
I am just so in love with gaining a working knowledge of various things. It gives you superpowers. That's not hyperbole, when you find out how something works, it actually changes the way you look at the world both figuratively and literally. I have so much more fun with things when I know about them.
Learning a little music theory or even just how to listen to music and pay attention analytically does so much. Music is a delicious lasagna instead of nice lyrics and a catchy melody. Plants all looked boring to me until I worked at a greenhouse and had to identify them by their leaves, and now I can look at wildflowers and weeds and forest undergrowth without getting bored, even if there are no interesting berries or flowers. Learning Japanese opened up a whole people group to understand, where before they may as well have been speaking nonsense (to me, anyway).
I'm not an expert in any of these, not by a long shot. But that's the point. Even basic understanding goes such a long way. Fall down the rabbit hole. Learn a language. Practice a skill. It changes your life for the better in things that you don't even realize you're missing out on because you've never known anything different.

I didn't check
Well this is a nice trip down memory lane - when I first joined Tumblr in 2011 it was because a bunch of webcomic artists I followed were moving here from DeviantArt. A lot of the names I scrolled past are not active anymore or have moved on to other projects, but it made me happy to get to the bottom and find @korybing , who is still updating Skin Deep to this day! Kind of wild to think that the comic I first started reading as a depressed college student undergoing a radical and unwanted life change due to a medical diagnosis (can't imagine why it resonated so hard with me haha) is still going strong. Thank you for making this wonderful story that I still love reading today. :)

happy 20 year anniversary of Neil banging out the tunes!
though every rat is special, it's a wonderful and unusual thing for their accomplishments to be remembered and cherished by so many people so many years later. we're all so fortunate to know about the rat who banged out the tunes!
thank you to all the people who sent me reference photos of their beloved rats for this piece!!! credits under the cut!
If you know the meaning of the word "defenestrate", do you remember how you learned it?
Yes (put it in the tags please I'm curious)
No
I don't know the meaning of the word defenestrate
These are going to be musical instruments when I’m done with them. Probably.
I made a panjo. A pandolin? It has 4 strings instead of 5, tuned GDAE like an Irish tenor banjo or octave mandolin. I just got it strung up and tuned last night and I keep playing around on it, completely baffled by the fact that I not only made a musical instrument, but it actually sounds good.
I feel a whole ramble coming on about how my interest in making instruments intersects with my interest in steampunk and solarpunk and creative reuse (the body of the panjo is a cake pan I got from a thrift store for $2) but right now I’m tired.
Making a pizza quilt: All finished!
As promised, here are the final completed photos of my pizza quilt. The whole thing only took me 1 week of planning/designing and fabric shopping, and 2 weekends to sew by hand*
*while sick and lacking the energy to do anything else
Close enough?
My cat was a little shy about using the quilt at first. (He's like that sometimes. I made him a doily last year, and he spent like 3 days gingerly walking around it on the coffee table to avoid stepping on it before realizing it was for him to chill on.)
I first tried giving it anchovies on top but he didn't seem interested:
So then I put the quilt on the dining table (which he is usually allowed on because I eat on the kitchen island and use the dining table as a crafting desk) and plopped the cat on top of it.
That seemed to get the message across, maybe a little too well. He instantly got comfortable and wouldn't let me pick him up off the quilt when I wanted to move it off the table.
Cody also seems to think the olives are like a smaller version of my hair scrunchies, which I'm constantly losing because he thinks they're his toys. He keeps pawing at them and trying to pull them off the quilt even though they're firmly stitched down.
Eventually he wandered off and I claimed the quilt back. The whole point of this was to make something for the cat to knead on instead of me, so I put the quilt on my bed and then made like I was getting ready to call it a night.
And sure enough, he jumped up and started roaming around like "hey, something's different about this place...?"
I'm not sure if he ended up kneading on the quilt because I fell asleep, but this is what I woke up to this morning:
Anyway, I now have a bunch of fabric and batting leftover, and I'm starting to understand why quilters never stop at just one quilt: you have to keep making quilts to use up supplies and keep buying more supplies to finish your stash busting projects. Now I kind of want to make pizza quilts in various toppings, but maybe smaller, like regular pizza sizes instead of dining table-sized. Or a cat bed, but shaped like a Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Or more food-themed household decor, like a pillow shaped like a Chinese potsticker dumpling. Or a set of quilted coasters that look like waffles or pancakes with butter and syrup.
Happy Godzilla Day!
Alright, let's switch things up!
If you send me $9+ on Ko-Fi and share a photo of your pet in the reblogs of this post, I will do a silly little drawing of them like the ones above!
The reblogs of this are full of delightful animal pics, if anyone needs that today. Here is Jetta for your viewing pleasure:
ATTENTION ROBOT PERVERTS: i finally (mostly) finished this how-to guide on using a workskin on AO3 to imitate computer stuff like bluescreen, pop-ups, command prompt, and retro monochrome green screens. So now you can add stuff like this to your AO3 fics:
All the code is included in the work, you just have to copy/paste the CSS into your own custom workskin, add that to whatever fic you want it to go in, and then add the HTML code for it. I tried to be thorough with the how-to guide but if anyone has questions I’m happy to answer them here or in the comments section of the fic
I may add or tweak a couple of things at a later date (or add more options if people are interested) but for now I’m pretty satisfied with where it’s at :-)
Mice in your home now get their own doors
A door is one of the things that makes a building unlike any other structure. All the doors in buildings are intended for human use, no matter which species actually enter and exit. We want to keep encouraging cross-species interactions, and give the smallest members of our communities the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to see, smell, and hear the mice in your home, and they will be able to see, smell, and hear you in return. Each mouse will have its own door, instead of one large door intended to accommodate all visitors. And yes, you'll be able to welcome multiple mice through a single door.
If a door falls into disuse due to illness, injury, or death, another mouse will be placed into your home. You won't lose mice just because they die.
Past mice will stay in your home-- including corpses. Removing all of those would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out - stay tuned!
It's very clear that you all have strong feelings about your homes and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for their homes is one of the things that makes them special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, we'll keep infesting your homes with new mice, so please stay in your homes, and do not leave.
Your presence has always been our favorite part of your home, whether you're a person or a mouse, and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If you'd like to discuss this change, leave a note in one of the mouse holes and we'll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to put more mice in your home.
Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes
The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!
It’s very clear that you all have strong feelings about Tumblr and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for how Tumblr works is one of the things that makes this place special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, we’ll keep reading your replies and reblogs, so please keep sharing your questions, concerns, and ideas.
Your creativity has always been the heart of Tumblr, whether you’re the original poster or adding something brilliant in the reblogs, and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If you’d like to talk directly beyond the comments, leave a reply and we’ll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to make Tumblr better.
