Post-QFaD Theory in Progress ...

I’ve previously mentioned that I’m working on a season one missing moment fic to explore the question of why Rapunzel didn’t go looking for Varian after the blizzard. I have a theory/headcanon about that which I almost posted about before but didn’t, and now I’m glad I waited until I’d rewatched the latter part of the season while taking notes!

So my theory (which I’m not going to explain until I’ve figured it all out) I came up with based on what I remembered of canon (I’m a newbie, seen the whole series through three times now and some individual episodes up to six times). I tweaked some small bits of the fic after rewatching Queen For a Day (while taking copious notes for other fic purposes, which ended up a literal transcript of most scenes) but in the main my theory still worked.

However I just managed to psych myself up to rewatching The Quest For Varian and The Alchemist Returns (again while taking notes), with a view to then doing Secrets of the Sundrop. Unfortunately, I’m now coming across things that either appear to contradict my theory (I’m sure I can make it work with a little tweaking) or have added questions that I need to answer in order to make it plausible.

So my fic, which was originally just going to cover events between QFaD and Painter’s Block, now looks like it may stretch all the way to TQFV. I have to show how the events I’ve planned actually lead to the things I’ve realised I hadn’t taken into account, in order so that readers don’t think “but that can’t be right because later this happened …”, and I need to figure out those things myself first!

This could take a while. I think I might need to make myself an actual flipping timeline. And the fic itself will probably end up multi-chapter, like my missing moment fics based around Rapunzel’s Return and Cassandra’s Revenge are looking to turn out like.

For those who don’t already know, I’ve planned to write quite a few missing moment fics. Because as amazing as most of the writing for TtS is, there are a lot of gaps to fill in! They’ll all be posted on AO3 under the series “Between the Lines” and I’ll tag on here “between the lines alexannah” whenever I post one. (I haven’t posted any TtS fics yet, BTW. Watch this space.)
