So you chose that they’ll raise it ey? The baby fever must be getting to them lolz
Macaque studied the egg from afar, cautious, in case of danger for his newborns. He WOULD. NOT. Be losing another child. But this stone- no. Egg… it was as if it had come for a reason. The egg was beautiful. Onyx with specks of white like the night sky. Macaque crouched down to get a closer look, still a few feet away in case of danger. Wukong shifted in front of him, shielding them in case of danger but allowing a view of the egg. Surprising. He was usually way more protective… Macaque turned to the egg once more. He could hear a tiny, faint heartbeat in it, slowing…
Something in him screamed to save this being just as it screamed to save his little ones just moments before. He gripped Wukong’s shoulder.
Wukong looked from the egg to his moon, suddenly gripping his shoulder. As he looked at the look in his mate’s eyes he knew that they agreed. This being was theirs. Something about them… they pleaded for refuge, for love. He didn’t know why or how he knew this but it rang true in his soul that this egg was his. They were as much his child as the babies in his mate’s arms were. He would protect them. He would protect them all. Maybe this was a second chance at protecting his family… He would NOT fail.
“Together.” Macaque whispered.
At they same time they reached, and touched the egg.
A light, not as bright as the sun, but gentler, like the glow of the moon enveloped the egg.
Macaque’s but sank to his stomach. Their heartbeat was already faint. What if they… Not again please not-
The sound of a giggle pierced through the tension in the air. A soft, lovely sound.
The soft light dimmed and in the place of the egg was a dark, wiggling bundle of fur. Macaque and Wukong stared as the little thing, with much effort, rolled onto their back. They- She… she had dark fur like Macaque’s and a sharp mask, also macaque’s, but of a lighter shade, a mix between his and his Sun’s, with a diamond shaped dot on her forehead. She was a bit bigger than her two siblings, maybe because she was born from an egg, and them from shades. She stared at Wukong with golden eyes as wide as the full moon. Identical eyes stared back in wonder. The whole image made Macaque’s heart flutter. This was what he had ever wanted. Love. Family. He kept staring at the little one so intently that he jumped when she craned her little neck to look at him back. Macaque never knew eyes could widen bigger than that of his little one when she saw him. Honestly he was terrified those little eyeballs would pop out! He quickly moved closer so she wouldn’t hurt herself. As she stared at him coming closer, she made an expression one could only describe as that of one who had conquered the world, a ditto of Wukong’s, well, except for the toothlessness of her endearing, perfect smile. Macaque shifted the babies, now awake and staring back at their new sister with equal awe as her, so as to caress her little cheek. As he did, she giggled again, the most beautiful sound he had ever heard. She indeed had inherited Wukong’s laugh, just as Macaque had hoped. A soft chuckle escaped his lips.
Wukong watched the interaction between his love and his children. They looked nothing like him, all copies of his moon, but that was what he had always wanted. The giggle of the little one lying on the grass shattered any doubt he had that she was a threat. No. She was his. He would protect her. He would protect them all.
Wukong watched as Macaque slowly placed the twins in his arms next to their sister. At first, they stared at each other in silence, the twins intertwining tails… in fear? Wukong opened his mouth to tell them it was okay when suddenly all three of them latched onto one another like they were always meant to be together. Honestly, they could easily be mistaken for triplets if he didn’t know better. Loving warmth spread all over him, as did the dark shadow of protectiveness in his gut. A chuckle escaped him, a real one, after months of anguish. This was his home. He reached forward to caress a tiny cheek when, to his surprise, Macaque swatted his hand away, fear in his eyes. fear?
Not- not yet. I’m… you’re not your old self. You’re… you now… I- I don’t-
The look in his eyes broke him, but he knew… he knew he’d become a ruthless monster.
“I’ll wait…” he replied with tears in his eyes. He took in the whole scene, forcing it into his mind to never forget home, never forget this feeling of family, and vowing to never EVER lose it again.
“Take them home,” he said, sighing, “keep them safe. I’ll be back.”
“Wukong where-“ but he had leapt into the trees, probably to put up more defense around the mountain.
Macaque sighed, carefully picking up the huddled children and holding them close to his chest. Here was his family… together…
Yes. We are together. We are safe.
Is this what you wanted? Truly?
