It occurs to me that some of you empty spaces robotgirls who like conversion stories, particularly the zoomers among you, may not have seen the stroggification sequence from Quake 4
Enjoy.

When '90s-flavoured pixely textures and low-res models have finally run their course in the indie FPS scene, I really hope we start getting stuff that looks more like this instead.
Quake IV
The Quake series is weird because it has three different identities (Ranger's interdimensional funtimes (Quake I and its expansions), the Strogg War (II, IV and Enemy Territory), and the multiplayer subseries (III, Live and Champions)), and only one of them (namely the multiplayer subseries) is explicitly connected to the other two.
I think I've said this before, but Quake 4 is weird. Mechanically it's like the midpoint between Quake II and Halo. Aesthetically it's Doom 3 but prettier (because it's the same engine but with more outdoor levels). There are companion NPCs like in Half-Life 2, but they always either die or are otherwise not allowed to progress further than necessary like in Half-Life 1. The player is just handed weapon-upgrades that the other marines pull out of their hammerspace. After that one scene, you know the one, no I'm not linking it happens, the game becomes a Half-Life clone, complete with health-chargers, a faster movement speed, and a rocket-launcher that uses lasers to aim.
Thinking about that thing Quake IV did where, after the Stroggification scene, the Strogg language is (mostly, I'll get back to this) translated for the player and stuff like health stations become useable. Anyway imagine a game that does something like this, but maybe like. In a Metroidvania or whatever where it's, like, required to unlock the true ending or whatever, and unlike Quake IV it actually translates every instance of the alien/fantasy language rather than just the "useful" ones (I said I'd get back to this).
New video!
Quake 4!
In this part, Corporal What's-His-Face starts his journey with a crash landing. How original!
