"At Union Mills we came upon the rebel works of defense. We came from the woods, which is nearly all of this nasty little pine, right out upon an open field from which, stretching away off in every direction could be seen earthworks. The country is not level, nor yet are there any very high hills, but there were breastworks to be seen in every direction. To the right on the top of a point, there was a small earthwork on which they had a number of Quaker guns mounted" [fake artillery made out of wood.] Wm. Medill, 8th Illinois Cavalry, Alexandria, Virginia, March 19, 1862
