The applications for this are tremendous, a smart surface could be constructed so that it "locks" another surface's position relative to its from several meters away without contact. 

essentially an objects from these smart surfaces could be made and positioned in any way and then freeze or unfreeze together. this would be great for non-mechanical temporary construction when the parts of a building (or vessel) are placed into position and then when activated act as one peace without the need for screws or any bonding.
