Loyd Alexander’s books have sat on my shelves for years. They are a relic from my elementary school days of rejecting everything my mom recomended as a way to assert all independence possible. Needing something easy on the brain yet still new in this time of quarantine was finally enough to get me to crack one open and boy am I glad I did.

Though fantastical medievalesque stories are not my favourite the Prydain Cronicals have earned a firm place on my to recommend to younger cousins list. I have only read The Black Cauldron (which is the second book, don’t ask why) but the themes explored and the main character’s arc teach lessons that I think I needed to hear.

The development of the protagonist from a whiny entilted boy to a selfless hero is a journey that hits me hard because I was once that kid who wanted a place at the grown up table. Now, I’m a high school senior faced with the fact that now I have to make my space at that table and that the selfless hero is the kind of grown up I want to be. Taran’s growth hit home with me because it’s not just inside, I get to see the people who have an impact on him, intentional or not and I watched him take lessons away from his interactions, a practice I know I need to maintain in order to become the person I want to be.

He comes to realise that sometimes the right thing to do isn’t the easy thing or the gloriful thing to do. You aren’t always going to get credit for the doing the right thing, in fact sometimes taking the high road will involve forfeiting your credit, and that can be hard. These reminders that being a good person is hard and that sometimes people fail shows how much work radical love takes and how easy it is to give up selflessness.

I don’t know if I’m going to read the rest of the series, I’m not all that invested in the plot. But The Black Cauldron has really hit home with me in a way I wasn’t expecting. The world is so depressing these days, it feels like everyone in power is working against me. This book is a reminder of how hard it is to set aside your ambishions for the betterment of society. That the sacrifice is the right choice but that it is really hard and really rare. This book has helped me to find a little grace to extend toward other people making tough choices and I am grateful for that.
