A literary analysis of a bus poem.
So the county I live in has a program in their public transit system called Moving Words. It’s actually pretty cool and the poems are fun to read. They are often by kids in elementary or middle school but there are some by adults too. They are generally pretty good. Anyway, I was bored on the bus so I decided to write an analysis of this poem because I had ideas and hey, I’m a nerd! Now I’ve stayed up waaay too late trying to finish it. :)
I like how Young used the structured the poem to convey that no matter how good a man he will become, all teenage boys objectify girls. Let’s first look at how Young develops the character of the man. A list of occupations—for lack of a better word— is used to build up a picture of a man. Most of these occupations are things with good connotations.

Reading this poem and my analysis again for the first time more than 5 years later, I realize how my interpretation was limited by my perspective and experience. When I wrote the above, I was in the beginnings of a mutual sexual awakening, with a loving, consenting partner my own age. I had been privileged in my girlhood to avoid sexual harm. But reading it now, after hearing the stories of women through #metoo and watching people I grew up with experience sexual assault and harassment, I see the poem in a new light. It's not about boyhood objectification. It's about power in trust. "defender of faith", "father of liberty", and "cinemantic auteur cum comedic genius" are all clever names for the professions we see stories of sexual abuse and predation come from over and over: pastor, politician, comedian. The next lines list other roles men can hold for a child that come with access and trust. Roles men often abuse to pray on children and girls. Places where the abuse doesn't make national headlines and cancel careers. The girl's eyes widen in fear, betrayal, shame, not excitement.
In hindsight, this seems obvious. I understand the context it's written in, what it's trying to comment on. Engaging in sexual acts with girls is not okay, no matter who you are. They are children we need to protect, not sexual objects. But the fact that I didn't see this shows me how important that context is in approaching a text. That when I approach texts from another time or culture or experience, I will get things wrong. That it can be important to learn that history listen to that experience if I really want to hear what the author is saying. I'm sorry Katherine Young for missing your message the first time. But I'm really proud of our town for displaying your message on our public transportation.
