The first quarter update is up on my Bees and Books blog! Here you can read my thoughts so far on Atlantis, the first Jack Howard book by David Gibbins.
The book is an adventure/thriller novel focused on protagonist Jack Howard, a maritime archaeologist who has stumbled upon a landmark shipwreck at the same time that a fellow archaeologist unearths an unusual papyrus pieces in Egypt. The combination of symbols seen on the papyrus and on an artefact from the wreck lead to a discovery that completely changes the way scholars will view the myth of Atlantis.
So far, the book has been largely focused on the archaeology aspect with descriptions of the technological approaches to maritime archaeology utilized by Howard’s team. This is likely due to the fact that the author is a trained maritime archaeologist himself. Nonetheless, there are still hints of the plot to come such as conflict with a thus-far faceless treasure hunter named Aslan, and a romantic subplot characteristic of the genre.
If you check out this tumblr, you’ll find my “thoughts as I go” posts, which I will update at least once a day as I make progress on Atlantis. Additionally, you can follow my twitter, goodreads, and instagram accounts for more updates on this and other reading adventures!
