hi, can i ask about the origins of the word queerplatonic? i'm agender/bisexual and i find the term really troubling, and actually a little offensive! it just seems to be using the word queer in the old, insulting way, to signify a relationship's weirdness? i really don't like that and it makes me really uncomfortable! i hope there's a better term for this kind of relationship!
i’m guessing that you’re asking me about the origins of the term “queerplatonic” because you saw this post of mine from 2013, which seems to have had a hand in popularizing the term on Tumblr.
i really do not know the exact origins of the word, although based on the article in my post its usage obviously dates back at least as far as 2011 within the ace/aro community. please read this post, which pretty much mirrors my feelings about the word and people’s issues with it.
either way, i am fairly certain that the usage of “queer” in “queerplatonic” has nothing to do with the historical usage as a slur, but rather has to do with its current reclaimed meaning as an identity used by those who are not heteronormative/amatonormative/gender normative.
that said, of course there are people who still find the reclaimation of the word to be troubling. if you are one of those people, might i suggest using “quasiplatonic” or “quasarplatonic” instead?
