Here are the slides from the panel btw! Feel free to share them wherever.
At the post office today:
Man with beautiful silver undercut and a coach bag: can I get a sheet of stamps please
Clerk: does it matter what kind?
Man, with homosexual despair: EVerything matters to me, unFORtunately.
youre not yaoiful at all
kitchen wheelchair, no okay cooking wheelchair, no okay -motorized, no can it be under like $1k at least, okay these are just desk chairs without arms
SUSAN STRYKER: The difference really is between feminists who want to use power to advance their interest as a biologically-defined minority versus those wanting to build a politics among all those negatively affected by patriarchy. I think what got called radical feminism or TERF has always been predicated on biological determinism and in ways it’s kind of supremacist. I used to say that the more feminism is about civil rights for people with uteruses, the more it becomes akin to any other kind of biologistic ideology, including racism. And the more it's critiquing systems of power with a vision of justice that is against structures of oppression, the less identitarian it is and more like a social movement than advocacy for a special biological category of people.
RIKI WILCHINS: They're posturing as the big protectors of women.
reading this both re: the intuitive reinventing of the term sex-based oppression as a model for organizing, and re: separatism for 'protection' as uninterested in dismantling the actual structures of oppression impacting many more negatively affected
fun fact: sometimes nonbinary people have more material experiences in common with other nonbinary, even if they were assigned/raised as different binary genders, than they do with binary people of the same assigned/raised binary gender. sometimes a person's nonbinary identity is more important to their identity and understanding their lived experienced than any binary alignment they may have
Free Speech Coalition trying to start Adult Industry Credit Union: INTEREST FORM LINK
Hey guys, the Free Speech Coalition looks serious about starting an adult industry credit union and they need our help to demonstrate to regulators that enough people would use it.
(and yes, credit unions can issue credit cards!)
Fill out this form if you're interested:
I don't ask much to have posts spread, but adult content creators are trying to break free from the censorship of current payment processors and we need one with a TOS that actually serves us. Please help us!
As someone who has been in the industry for a decade now, a credit union is the way to go. Credit unions (key word: union!) are member owned and profits pay back members as dividends.
Bear in mind that your card processors (Visa, American Express, Mastercard, etc.) are distinct entities with their own service terms and present a separate obstacle that a credit union doesn't overcome, but it's an excellent first step and there are workarounds. Members within the union would be able to send and receive funds amongst themselves with no outside restrictions imposed. 🤷
This is also non-binding; it's an interest check. Depends on the rules of individual credit unions, but sometimes you don't even have to be engaged with a particular company or industry sector to use the credit union. So don't worry about if you think you'd qualify, if you're in the US and interested, take 60 seconds to fill it out
binary trans people are like "yeah, girl hormones will make you look like a girl!" "testosterone will give you male puberty and make you look like a man!"
have you considered for even one minute that you're not the only damn people in the universe?
"oestrogen is a girly girl hormone" except there are nonbinary people and trans men whose dominant sex hormone is oestrogen and who may not want to go on T. it doesn't mean our hormones are "female" or "girly".
"testosterone is a manly man hormone" except there are nonbinary people and trans women whose dominant sex hormone is testosterone and who may not want to go on E. it doesn't mean their hormones are "male" or "manly".
just because cis people insist every single bodily function must be gendered does NOT mean trans people have to do the same.
like it's great you find your HRT affirming for your manhood or womanhood but it doesn't mean they're inherently male or female.
it's just misgendering based on biology. it's the exact same logic that cis people use to misgender us. it harms other binary trans people and it especially harms nonbinary people because no matter our dominant sex hormone, you're always gonna call it boy hormone or girl hormone.
it's transmedicalism. you don't have to identify as a transmedicalist to perpetuate the transmedicalist model of "testosterone = male = man, estrogen = female = woman, trans = needs HRT, intersex = DSD = needs HRT, doesn't need HRT = not trans = cis AGAB"
the absenting of nonbinary people from this model is intentional, not accidental. the absenting of intersex people with codominant T&E is intentional, not accidental. the absenting of people with neither dominant T nor E as infeasible is intentional, not accidental.
you can for example de-medicalize T for yourself in an affirming way by calling it your boy juice, but to not perpetuate transmedicalism you do gotta pay attention to who's hearing what in where you're saying it.
One day when I'm not still struggling with the dissociation and burnout caused by the fascist invasion of the city I live in at the hands of my federal government, I will write about how the fact that Judith Butler is hated by the right wing, radfems + TERFs, and gender conforming binary trans people (especially transmeds) actually makes complete sense because they're all demographics of people with their own intense attachments to/investments in the sex and gender binary and Butler's work asks us to question, divest, and detach from that very system.
i hated gender trouble because it was deployed against nonbinary embodiment/signifiers as unfeasible and nonbinary selfhood as immaterial
turns out that's just All of gender/queer/trans studies :) even when they don't mean to :) lmao serano characterizing butler's work as enabling lateral sexism against transbinary transsexuals by positioning them as 'less enlightened' for transitioning and being monogender women or men, then quasi-apologizing on noticing people using her own work to enable lateral sexism against nonbinary trans people by claiming they're positioning themselves as more enlightened for 'never transitioning'
i'm sorry judith butler, transmed cooptation isn't your actual work
oh.
so Straight as in hegemonic straightness, pericishet gender-conforming (vanilla monogamous abled) straightness, right. distinct from straight, as in st4t; straight trans people are not granted Straightness. white, Western; racialization distances from human Straightness toward feral animality.
is it not so too Binary as in hegemonic binary gender, white Western pericishet gender-conforming (vanilla monogamous abled) Binary. distinct from binary, as in transbinary; trans women and trans men are not granted Binariness, no matter how monogender and no matter how gender-conforming and no matter transition.
none of this does away with the utility of lowercase straight and binary as positionalities as well as willingly-owned identities. none of this is subversivism, accusation of failure. to be rejected from Straightness does not change one's sexuality; to be rejected from Binariness does not change one's gender. if that rejection is along one axis, such as transness, that being targeted by cissexism does not de facto mean targeting by homophobia or exorsexism, even if those are deployed.
which is to say, of course trans people are not traitorous Reinforcers of the oppressive systems of Straightness and Western Binary, simply by 'fitting'. it is not praxis to be same-gender attracted, or to be nonbinary; there is no activist failure or success in this. that 'fit' is provisional, revocable, and second-class at best. and at the same time, of course those unable to fit at all face a different flavor of intense targeting. and the resistance to naming that has been chronic and is a problem.
I posted on bsky but I haven't here apparently so if you're looking for something to read today, I'd like to recommend the two parter How To Prevent Detransition In Five Simple Steps (Part 1) and Detrans/Uncis (Part 2) . This pair of essays is pro-trans, pro-autonomy, and I really appreciate Emma's perspective. So go forth and read 💃
But that’s not the only way ‘respectable gender’ is ensured in queer circles. I’ve also observed it to be an absence of transsexuality. That is, gender is to be fucked with in words and pronouns and haircuts and porn—but to transition about it would be kind of gauche, don’t you think? A little gender-conformist?
both essays are really good but this stood out as just so hitting the nail on the head about it all
really good set of pieces. i'll highlight the first comment section's mention of dignity of risk in opposition to gender austerity, which emma then discusses in part two:
Linear transition was written in an attempt to enforce a kind of gender austerity. Only those that really need it can get it, and so there must be competition, a hierarchy of haves and have-nots. There must be doctors that will prescribe you wrong dosages based on irrelevant research and leave you to wonder why you feel so off. You must not pick and choose the changes you want, because your sex is not for you to decide—it is to be granted to you, justified via a constant defense of self-identification.
You guys know how often people try to split the trans part from the man part? Was thinking about how annoying it is in a different way. When I see other trans guys start to pass a bit and get deeply guilty about women walking quickly away, or moving to a different seat on the bus, or not wanting to work with them, the comments are always full of other dudes listing what they do to accommodate or seem friendlier or smaller. And my jaw is on the fucking floor. Because then I remember that most men and mascs on Tumblr are somewhat androgynous five-foot-zip white boys. And this isn't a shot, I love y'all, but it's relevant. Because my first thought when a lady does those things, is: okay racist bitch, I get it. Because for most dudes on this site, transition is the first time they've had multiple instances of women moving away dramatically or purse clutching or pulling out a taser/knife/pepper spray even though you live in the same building or on the same block. I grew up with these things, with women and sometimes men assuming the worst about me simply because I possess both melanin and a resting bitch face. Even when I was a girl in ankle length skirts, and now still when I'm an adult man. Now, back to the division. Because what you hear in most ostensibly progressive online spaces is that, well, you're a man, so it's actually very fine and alright for people in general, women, all trans people, to treat you with suspicion. However, this same behavior is not acceptable in leftist spaces, supposedly, if the recipient is trans or a person of color. That's a clear cut no, of course. Unacceptable bigotry. And honestly it pisses me off to have to see even other trans men/mascs on here posting that they totally understand why people treat them awfully now because men are just terrible in general supposedly , and then right after that post about how supposedly they're against racial profiling and/or how silly the idea of trans people being a threat in bathrooms is. I would just like people to pick one and stick with it. I don't get to cleave myself into parts that fit neatly on either side of an oppression pissing contest. I'm just a guy, trying to live as one whole person. Pissed off and fed up.
there is no nonbinary identity that is more accepted than others*.
people say nonbinary means being in between the binary genders until someone is androgyne or something similar, then they're a bad nonbinary person for fitting a stereotype.
people say nonbinary means not having a gender until someone is agender, then they're missing a fundamental part of what makes us human.
people say nonbinary means being both binary genders until someone is a manwoman or similar, then they're being contradictory.
people say nonbinary is a third gender until someone is maverique or similar, then they're just making up identities to be special.
people say nonbinary means being gender-neutral until someone is neutrois or similar, then they're also bad for fitting a stereotype.
people say nonbinary people all fit into either transmasc or transfem until someone does, then they're actually just a trans man or a trans woman in denial.
and this supposed validation of different ways to be nonbinary is only done to invalidate other people, i.e. if i say i'm nonbinary and maverique, i guarantee you someone's gonna turn around and insist i must be masculine or feminine, or that i'm not really nonbinary because nonbinary means genderless, then they will do the same thing to an agender person. they only say this to invalidate us while not trying to seem like a complete bigot, as in "i accept nonbinary people who do it correctly".
they keep moving the goalposts so that we can never win.
and the fact that some nonbinary people see this exorsexist behaviour and insist there is a thing such as a "gender trinary" where three genders are more accepted than others means that their rhetoric is working. it's creating a divide within the nonbinary community. it's making our community tear itself apart.
the sooner we realise they do this to all of us and work together to defend each other, the stronger we wlll be.
*there are nonbinary people whose genders are pretty binary-adjacent and who can live as a binary gender without much discomfort or dysphoria which gives them a bit more privilege, but that's not at all the same as these nonbinary men or women being accepted for who they are. they are accepted as fake binary versions of them, and if they were more openly nonbinary, that part would not be accepted, they wouldn't be accepted as their whole selves. acceptance on the condition of keeping parts of you to yourself is not acceptance. i've actually heard from multiple nonbinary men and women who opened up to some people about also being nonbinary and they lost support, friends and more.
you cannot make a post about how men put women in certain boxes without someone going "but what if i love the box? what if i've decided that it's comfortable in the box? are you gonna tell me i'm not ALLOWED to like the box? not very feminist of you to police a woman's decisions... maybe you'd be less ugly and miserable if you stopped talking about the box LMFAO #Girlboss #MyBox<3"
#and its like. 'what if ive decided its comfortable to be in the box' it is always going to be more comfortable to be in the box #they will reward you for staying in the box and punish you for trying to leave it #that doesnt mean the box is like. a good place to be — @butchfaith
