probably my favourite thing about university is the way everyone gets slightly unhinged by the time finals roll around, even the lecturers
actual question from today's communications exam:
the term paparazzo, some claim was popularised by the 1960 Fellini film La Dolce Vita, originated from a term similar to that of a mosquito. the mosquito is a parasitic organism that extracts blood, yet provides no benefit to its hosts. applying what you have learned this session, paparazzi are more like _____ than mosquitos because _____
(A) spiders; they catch prey in their webs, wrap them in silk, then devour their flesh (B) crabs; they are scavengers (C) butterflies; they start off as caterpillars then transform into beautiful, flying works of art (D) clownfish/anemones; they have a symbiotic relationship with hosts where they feed off undigested food from the anemone and faecal matter from the clownfish provides nutrients to the anemone (E) what are you talking about, you crazy person???
is there a scientific way of saying 'you guys really need to get your shit together'
no but if you think about it smelling is the weirdest thing ever
like there's little particles of food and flowers and dog shit just floating around in the air all the time and then sometimes they fly up through these two gaping holes in your face and slot into tiny little receptors in your nose and you can't ignore it and suddenly you feel hungry or happy or like you're about to throw up i just find that super odd
the other day one of my students tried to tell me that in the pop test hydrogen and oxygen gases combine to produce oxide and hydrogen 2+ ions
I almost cried
I can't stop laughing at this slide and I have no idea why
CNXI is the Cedric Diggory of the cranial nerves (p2)
"CNXI, you are so annoying, okay? You're like this nerve that's just around all the time when we don't need another nerve around. You're this spare nerve all the time, this accessory nerve. You're such a spare!"
the ultimate gameshow (from a cognitive psychologist's perspective):
game works like deal or no deal, but half the cases contain goats
after each round, the main contestant has the option of switching their case with one of the unopened cases on the display
the other contestants on the stands may guess what is in their own cases
if they correctly guess the amount of money they win $1000
if they correctly guess a goat they can either trade it in immediately for $200 or keep it, raise it and sell it after a year for $500
if the main contestant consistently refuses to make a deal and their case contains a goat, they receive a herd of goats equivalent in number to the number on their case AND THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SELL THEM, EVER
