Anon Headcanon Request: “How do you think Noctis reacted when his mother died?“

Okay, I’m confused on that backstory on whether Queen Mama died when Noctis was an infant or she died in Episode 1 of Brotherhood. I wanna see/meet all the chocobros’ mamas; I’m being deprived of cute family interaction, guys. Just give me the names because I don’t wanna just make OCs, but I was right that one of Gladio’s sisters was named Iris though I wish he had more siblings. Since you won’t get too much from the infant perspective and being told when he’s older that his mother died because of him or something, I’m gonna give you his perspective as a child.

After Noctis' accident, he had been blessed and cursed with the eyes that could see the light of expiring souls. Just no one didn't know it at the time and thought some recuperation alone would be enough heal his injuries, mentally he had been fine when he finally woke up. However, his mother was the first to witness that something was wrong because Noctis made a casual observation about her soul, her light, ebbing away. She blanched, calmly asking her young son to repeat what he said, but he was fascinated by something else and never mentioned it again. She couldn't bear addressing it again lest he would hear the trembling fear in her tone or scare him. She had feared for her life, of leaving her husband and son alone and what it would mean for her son’s future; Noctis didn’t understand his sight as something serious until later in his life. She kept appearances of the cheerful and benevolent queen, attempting to keep the cryptic comment off her mind while going away to the temple in secret to pray and ask the gods for answers. She had sought advice from all over Eos to explain to her what it had meant behind Regis’ back, amazingly. There were quite a few things that the king and queen have kept from each other. She loved her son and intended on protecting him even when she was terrified. If she was living on borrowed time and couldn’t determine her final day, she was going to prepare for her son’s future.

I can offer that while her fears were substantial and grave, it wasn’t right of Queen Mama trying to soften the blows of death, even if it was for everyone’s sake, when she explained to Noctis that when living things die they become stars. The gravity of her death didn’t overwhelm Noctis at first, when he innocently quipped to Regis that his mother became a star and the prince became emotionally stunted when he learns the truth. Life is simply unfair.

Queen Mama had been feeling under the weather and she had thought the way she would die was through an illness. It turned out that she was pregnant. She nearly panicked, facing the dilemma of what to do from there, her life and the life of her unborn child. Regis was confused by her odd behavior when a new addition to the family is always wonderful news. She thought she would die at childbirth, but in reality, she dies protecting Noctis from an assassination attempt. She shouldn’t have let Noctis talk her into wandering away from the group, she faced having to protect him by herself. She fought fiercely without giving a second thought about dying. Mortally wounded and knowing that she couldn’t save herself, she hid Noct and told him she’ll come back to get him. As she collapsed dying, she apologized to her unborn child, how could she possibly consider not having him/her to save her own life and that she was a terrible mother to deny the child to be born into this world.

Noctis came out of his hiding spot and found his mother’s corpse. When help arrived, it was too late, the young prince and the wise king lost their loved ones that day.

Noct felt guilty for both his mother and unborn sibling's deaths. He hated his eyes, when they turned red, and whenever he knew death was inevitable. What’s the use of having such power just to be powerless to delay or even prevent death?
