The LGBTQ+ community — and particularly the transgender community — has lost an iconic activist.
Truly one of the greats. She used her long life to do some much good in the world. She shall be so very much missed.

I have written my longest political essay in the last 9 months. It's a follow-up to my first political essay "Dialogue of an Indigenous Woman to Vegan TikTok and PETA"

💛- a post about a desi gay right activist
Forgive me if I start with an Indian one, in next asks I will try to look for non Indian ones.
We're going to talk about Ashok Row Kavi.
India's first openly Gay Man. Founder of Humsafar Trust. Editor of Bombay Dost. Journalist. Lgbt activist. Controversial since times when 'problematic' was not a word in every lay person's mouth.
He's not a perfect activist by today's standard. But his impact on independent India and it's lgbt movement is greater than anyone can possibly compute. He came out publically in 1984. But he'd been in public sphere in even before. He's a journalist, always working in public spheres, used to his opinions being disregarded and hence even more protective of them.
He certainly focuses on Gay men and that too Hindu Gay men. Although he's educated in al lgbt issues and other religions, he actively chooses to focus on Hinduism and gay men when he talks about lgbt in India. He's a 'hindu right wing' activist. But he's not uncritical of their policies either, he considers himself on 'extreme right of RSS' even. However he disregards separate movements made by queer women, Dalits and muslims and is accused of being non inclusive in his speech. He says however that everyone is welcome at Humsafar and 'doesnt care if your cunt is Hindu, Muslim or RSS' which... Bold.
He has made several headways about AIDS epidemic, about education regarding sex-sexuality, safe sex. He has used his extreme hindu stance to fight against section 377, showing that hindu scriptures do not condemn homosexuality as a sin. He has aired controversial opinions about Gandhi back in 90s and alleged that Saif Ali Khan inflicted physical abuse on him because Kavi wrote an article where he pointed out homoerotic subtext of Main Khiladi Tu Anari- a saif ali khan and Akshay humar buddy comedy. He's a walking ammunition for controversy.
But he's a certain lesson in understanding activism in real life.

"This is not an act of heroism! No, this is a right and rights are won," Malak Al-Kashef wrote.
An update on this story, which we posted about the other day: The good news is trans activist Malak al-Kashef is no longer in prison! Unfortunately, this case still has a way to go: Malak is awaiting trial, and will return to prison if she is found guilty; her lawyer requested her release so that she can undergo forensic testing demanded by the Egyptian government to confirm she has had gender affirmation surgery before she can request to be placed in a women’s prison.
To quote Malak herself: “We're never going to stop fighting for our spaces, rights, freedoms and an admission from our country, that we exist. This will happen, it's just going to take some time, but it will happen and history will be our witness.”

🌈✊ YOUTH ACTIVISM SERIES - THE IT GETS BETTER PROJECT 🌈✊
THE IT GETS BETTER PROJECT IS LOOKING FOR OPENLY LGBTQ+ YOUTH ACTIVISTS TO SHARE YOUR STORY IN A WEB DOCU-SERIES.
Our goal is to give viewers around the world a hopeful, affirming glimpse into the lives of activists who identify as LGBTQ+ around the world (including outside of USA) and a respect for the intersectionality of many forms of activism. We’re looking for young people between the ages of 14-24 who are comfortably “out” as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer and who are involved in intersectional causes that aren’t necessarily directly about LGBTQ+ equality.
Maybe you’re part of a group of young queer activists working to end gun violence or fight for change in immigration policy. Maybe you’re creating a space for other LGBTQ+ youth to join you in advocating for global climate change or local workers rights. Maybe you’re creating art as activism related to racial inequality or reproductive justice. Maybe you are just a young person who is passionate about a particular cause and want to see a change in the world. We’re looking for young people between 14-24 who are changing the world...or even your own community. No cause is too small!
Does being openly LGBTQ+ impact your view of the world? Why are you so passionate about the cause you’re fighting for? The time commitment is limited- filming would take place over 1-2 days in your area based on your availability.
What's your story? Please email us ASAP and let us know! [email protected]
PLEASE REFERENCE “ACTIVISM” IN THE EMAIL AND TELL US ABOUT YOU!
