Alternate Asexual Flag Design

Designed an alternative to the asexual flag.

The lavender background represents community, same as the purple stripe on the original asexual flag.

The large outer circle represents the spectrum of asexual identities.

The small inner circle with a line through it represents a stylised "no" symbol, but the circle is also crossed by a line the same colour as the background, representing both the rejection or lack of sexual attraction combined with the possibility for sexual desire without sexual attraction. Sex repulsed and sex indifferent aces are represented by the dark purple bar, sex favourable aces and aces who have high libidos are represented by the "invisible" bar.

(There are, after all, aces with fetishes and kinks, and aces who like getting off, and aces who enjoy sex as part of a romantic relationship but feel no sexual attraction, and so on.)

The smaller circle also doubles as symbolic of two nerve synapses meeting, implying the biochemical possibility of love, affection and companionship, without the socialised expectation of sex.

Note that this is not intended to "replace" the more common asexual flag in use. I've just personally never felt represented by it, and I dislike its drab colour scheme. This, I think, conveys asexuality just as well, albeit esoterically, while being a bit more interesting to look at.

Alternative Asexual Flag Design – Mark II

Following on from yesterday's alternative asexual flag post, a slight modification to the design based on some prompting and suggestions from @stargazerley :)

I have added an inner ring and two "spokes" to the outer circle to distinguish the flag's design from Morgan Carpenter's intersex flag, while also adding a bit of visual interest and flair that helps highlight the inner circle by improving the visual flow a bit.

I'm really pleased with this design and will see how I can make an SVG version for people to use.

Please note: this flag is not intended to replace the asexual flag currently in use since 2010. I have great respect for it and its original designers and I believe their intentions were and are good.

However, I have never personally felt represented by it, and I find its colour scheme to be rather drab. I also feel the use of mostly monochromatic colours gives the impression of seriousness, desolation and coldness, a stereotype many asexuals have been trying for decades to shake off. I see no reason to simply take the flag for granted as the only option to represent asexuals as a community.

This design provides an alternative for me and other people who wish they had another symbol, one that perhaps better represents their diverse experiences as asexual people.

Explanation for the symbolism below.

The lavender background represents community, as with the original asexual flag.

The large circle represents the spectrum of asexuality and how, though asexuality has many expressions and experiences, all are equally valid.

The smaller circle within and the "spokes" have no special meaning and are simply there to improve visual flow, but if you did want them to symbolise something, they can perhaps symbolise people who are asexual-adjacent, such as demisexuals, cupiosexuals and aegosexuals.

The smaller circle in the middle is crossed by a bar the same colour as the background, making it resemble a "No" symbol (🚫), but is also crossed by another bar the same colour as the circle in the other direction. These two overlapping bars represent the rejection or lack of sexual attraction, combined with the possibility for libidinal desire without sexual attraction. In this way it aims to represent every asexual sexual expression: sex-repulsed, sex-indifferent, sex-favourable; low-libido, high-libido.

The crossing bars mean the smaller circle also resembles a nerve synapse, which implies the biochemical possibility of love, affection and companionship that comes with being human, without the sociocultural expectation of sex.

Tonight I got to explain to someone who’s loved me for a long time who’s bisexual what it was like to discover that I’m asexual.

To finally have my lack of sexual desire explained in such a way that made me feel seen and heard. Idk, it’s always one thing to come out publicly in a post and another to yourself, to reach that self acceptance. But it’s a whole other thing to explain it to someone and have them know what it’s like to come to an understanding of themselves and feel that wholeness.

Idk. It’s wild. Life is wild. It’s moments like this when I’m reminded of the importance to keep fighting and keep living.

Just these beautiful moments of clarity. Being understood by another person is so lovely.
