the term homophobia was coined by a psychologist in the 1950s. he called it homophobia because he noticed his co-workers getting nervous when they had to work with queer patients, akin to a fear. this was a big step for the lgbtqia+ community because originally homophobia was simply just called anti-gay, which framed the queer people as the wrong, weird, out of the ordinary ones. meanwhile, homophobia framed homophobic people as the wrong, weird, out of the ordinary ones. over time the term progressed from the fear of queer people or being labeled as queer to the fear of or aversion to queer people to the oppression of or aversion of queer people.
