If you’re looking for a fun way to spend an evening, google ‘Caper in the Castro’ probably the world’s first queer video game, still playable online today!

According to the original description:

In the game you assume the role of a lesbian private detective,  Tracker McDyke, in search of a kidnapped drag queen, Tessy LaFemme. What you stumble onto is an even bigger and more hideous crime with a mystery  that surrounds it. (Who is Dullagan Straightman?  Who is the mysterious “L.L.” that Straightman works for?  What is the meaning of the cryptograph?)

Artist C.M. Ralph created the game in 1989 for free, with the request that if you enjoy playing it, you donate to an AIDS-related charity of your choice.

Samus Aran is a girl, how could I forget? The forty-year-old Metroid series of video games follows the adventures of this intergalactic bounty hunter. Samus’ identity as a woman was revealed in the original game Metroid (1986) but only if you completed the game in a brisk time.

At the time, this was a total shock for players, given the manual had male pronouns for Samus.

Back when I first came across Samus, almost a decade later, I didn’t realise how profound her being a woman was. In particular, how a suit of armour led people to assume the person inside was a man.

As a closeted transgender woman, I didn’t realise until I understood a woman inside a suit of armour whom everyone sees as male applied to me.
