we’ve been waiting for content like this for far too long
Book Review: ‘Queerly Loving (Volume 1)’ Edited by G Benson and Astrid Ohletz
by TARA SCOTT
Queerly Loving (Volume 1) is a short story collection that gives happy endings to a range of LGBTQA+ characters, by authors who themselves are from across the LGBTQA+ spectrum.
The nine stories are so varied in style and content that there is sure to be something for everyone. Want to read a fluffy contemporary YA story with a Jewish trans boy and his crush? It’s in there and it’s called “Miss Me With That Gay Shit (Please Don’t)” by Sacha Lamb. How about a science fiction story with lesbians, nonbinary people and a trans woman, that features a poly triad rescuing their friend’s girlfriend? It’s in there too, and it’s called “A Gallant Rescue” by A.P. Raymond! Best of all, because the stories celebrate queer love in many of its possible forms, nobody dies or gets their heart broken, and it’s glorious.
It’s not unusual to pick up a collection only to find one or two excellent stories, a few very good ones, one terrible story, and the rest falling somewhere in between. Not so with Queerly Loving, where all of the stories are engaging and interesting, and many of them warm and lovely.
The blurb for Queerly Loving says “Get ready for your queer adventure,” which is an apt catchphrase. Each story is sure to make your heart happy and full of hope that everyone can have a happily ever after. You won’t be able to read these stories without a smile and many of them will stick with you long after you’ve finished reading them.

What’s your short story in Queerly Loving about? What inspired you to write it?
My story is called “Gasping for Air” and is set in North Germany in a town called Bremen. The main protagonist Mika is enby (non-binary) and demisexual. “Demisexual” means they only feel sexually attracted to people they also have an emotional connection with. But more than this, Mika does not think that sexual relationships are more important than platonic ones. So I wanted to tell a story about queerplatonic friendships and how people can feel really close without having sex or kissing. Mika works in a left-wing queer bar, and we also get to know some of their awesome friends.
Writing this story was a lot of fun for me but I also learned that editing is hard work. I don’t know how ‘real’ authors do it and how they keep loving their stories despite the editing process This was just a short story, I can only imagine how much work goes into a real novel.

What’s your short story in Queerly Loving about? What inspired you to write it?
The Warrior and The Dragon is a story about a warrior who is seeking justice for her village and her father’s death. She goes to a dragon’s cave to kill him but ends up finding a girl there instead. It plays a bit with grey morality and how history has many different sides depending on how you look at it.
I wrote this story because I wanted to try to work with fantasy in a different way from what we see in so many mainstream stories. Usually, the secondary worlds we see are inspired by European medieval times. But here, I wanted to work with a world based more on nature and small communities, away from royalty and castles. And of course, I always try to bring something from Brazilian culture to my stories so I tried to get inspired by names and places I know from my country, bringing also different kinds of dragon legends to its lore.
Book Review: Reintegration Queer dystopian sci-fi that you can lose yourself in.
by TARA SCOTT
Reintegration is a dystopian sci-fi story that paints a grim picture of a very possible future.
It’s also a future where it’s not safe to be queer, whether that means sleeping with someone of the same sex or not identifying with the gender you were assigned at birth. Despite that, however, Reintegration celebrates queerness through its characters like Lexi who is a nonbinary woman who loves other women in all of their forms. Lexi doesn’t care about other people’s opinions and she thumbs her nose at every convention society has to offer, especially when it comes to who she chooses to warm her bed. The supporting cast also includes a trans man and a trans woman, and if you ever want a primer for how to handle trans characters, pick up this book and pay attention. They are fully formed characters with strong feelings and motivations, neither of them get deadnamed or fetishized even as they’re sharing their back stories, and they never feel like cardboard cutouts—all of which is exactly as it should be.
