Maggie’s POV:
I finally had a day off, no Ivy, no work, and Wendell had done his part to stay far away. I took the time to finally put up paintings to cover the bullet holes riddling my apartment. Just as a I leaned back to view my handiwork, there was a knock at the door.
“Oh what now?”
I had to give it to them, at least this person knocked.
“Just a minuet!” I shouted through the door.
I frowned as I looked around for something to throw on. Considering it was laundry day, there wasn’t much I could grab. So I settled on a T-shirt before opening the door. I had to adjust my line of sight, when I wasn’t met with a pair of eyes when I opened the door. I looked down to see a gothic looking man standing there.
“You must be Oswald.” I concluded.
He chuckled awkwardly.
“They told me you were smart, how did you know who I am?”
“We’ll for starters, Y/N actually has an incredible gift for describing people. And secondly, you’re the only person other than Jim or Harvey that would actually knock on the door. Everyone else just lets themselves in.”
I stepped aside to let him in, quickly closing the door behind him before watching him waddle over to my kitchen counter. It was kinda cute. I shook the thought out of my head.
It was then I noticed the bouquet of flowers in his hands. But it appeared he also noticed my lack of pants at that moment. I watched as a subtle blush creeped onto his face.
“Sorry about the outfit, everything’s in the wash. Those for me?” I asked.
He smiled.
“It’s no problem. Do you have a-“
“Vase? Cabinet near the window.”
I watched as he struggled to reach it with his height, wincing at the look on his face. Victor and y/n had warned me of his temper, he’ll even Jim had. I quickly came up behind him, reaching over him to bring the vase down. I didn’t say a single word about it.
“These are beautiful, thank you. So to what do I owe the pleasure?”
I arranged the flowers the way I liked them, force of habit from my job. He seemed to be watching me intently.
“We’ll, shouldn’t the mayor know about his citizens?”
I turned, raising my brow. He smiled again.
“I was simply curious. Not many people capture the attention of my assassins and live to see another day.”
“Ahh, we’ll I suppose I should thank you.”
“For what?” He asked.
“We’ll I’m sure half the reason I’m still alive is because you haven’t ordered them to kill me.”
“But as far as I know, you’ve done nothing wrong…”
“I’ve heard you’ve killed people for less.” I shrugged.
“Ahh, so your Detective has gotten to you.”
“Can we not talk about him right now? I’m afraid I’ll have to kick you out If we do. And I don’t want to upset you. I’m actually quite enjoying the company.”
“Alright. Then I suppose you wouldn’t want to hear about the Gala I’m hosting tomorrow.”
“Gala?”
He smirked.
“I’ve had my goons handing out invitations all week. I wanted to deliver yours in person.”
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a red envelope. I gently took it from his hands. I flipped it over, smiling at how neatly my name was sprawled across the fabric.
“Is this your handwriting Oswald?”
He nodded. “My mother taught me, it gives good first impressions.”
“It’s beautiful. I would love to me her sometime.”
He frowned, looking down at his feet.
“Did- did I say something wrong?” I panicked.
“She’s, she’s no longer with us I’m afraid. Though I’m sure she would have loved to meet you too. You’re very Polite miss Blossom.”
I frowned, pinching off a smaller red flower from the bouquet before walking over to him. I knelt down and tucked it into his hair.
“Please, call me Maggie. Im terribly sorry for your loss. She must have been amazing if she raised you.” I complimented.
I stood back to my full height, hoping I wouldn’t make him feel small in comparison. Even Jim was taken aback by my height when we first met. I was actually 2 inches taller than he was. I found out the exact measurement when Edward had brought me down to the records room after my inquiry. They kept details about every cop on the precinct. I only read his physical descriptors, not wanting to betray his trust by reading something I shouldn’t. I smiled at the memory, Ed and I had grown quite close recently. I was brought back from my daydreaming.
“Earth to Maggie.” Oswald joked.
It was nice to see this side of him, I expected him to be serious this whole time.
“Right, sorry. We were talking about the Gala.”
“Yes, I’m afraid Jim is invited, I wasn’t aware you two weren’t-“
“We were never officially together. I suppose that’s the problem, he doesn’t like me the way I like him.”
I sighed.
“I’ve been there.” Oswald relented.
I furrowed my brows.
“Why would anyone reject you? You seem so sweet.”
I hadn’t meant to say that out loud, but I was genuinely confused. I had heard of the atrocities he’d committed, but this was Gotham, nobody was innocent.
“You’re too kind. Are you always this sickeningly sweet?”
I chuckled.
“I guess you’ll just have to find out. Will your person be in attendance at this Gala?” I asked.
He looked at me with confusion before nodding.
“We’ll then, allow me to propose something.”
He signalled for me to continue.
“Why don’t we attend the Gala together? We can flaunt our newfound acquaintanceship in front of Jim, hopefully spurring some jealousy in him. And hopefully making the person you’re interested in jealous too.”
He said nothing about my scheme.
“You keep saying person…” he trailed.
“We’ll I don’t wish to make assumptions Mr. Cobblepot, but you don’t seem particularly… how do I put this… straight.”
“What would give you that impression?”
He didn’t seem upset, which I was thankful for, but curious. I simply gestured to myself.
“Not that I think I’m the epitome of attractiveness, far from it actually.” I sighed. “But boys will be boys. If Jim or Harvey, he’ll even if Eddie saw me like this, they would be far more flustered then you were. But at least they’re gentleman. Everyone else would just take advantage of my lack of pants.”
He frowned yet again, it seemed to almost be a permanent fixture on his face.
“People are disgusting my Dear. Did you say Eddie?”
“Yes, Edward! He works down at the station with Jim, sweet boy.”
I heard a growl emit from his throat and I looked down at him in confusion. Then it hit me like a tone of bricks.
“Omg!” I exclaimed.
He looked up at me frustrated.
“Omg!” I said once more, twirling excitedly.
“Are you alright?” He suddenly asked, confused.
“I’m more than alright Oswald, because I figured it out! Oh this is brilliant!”
I was practically jumping out of my skin. He placed his hand on mine to calm me.
“Are you having a psychotic break?” He asked.
I shook my head, smiling like a mad woman.
“You like Mr. Nygma!” I said, in a sing song voice.
Oswald pulled back.
“No, no I do not.”
I giggled.
“Oh you totally do! That’s adorable! Now we have to go through with my plan. Edward will be sure to notice you.”
“But what about Jim?”
“Screw him! I’m over chasing boys anyways, if he wants to come to me, he’ll come. But this, this is important. Edward needs someone in his life to get over that stupid girl he keeps talking about, Kringle something. And you, my Dear Oswald, should be that person. You two would be adorble together.”
He seemed to think over my words for a second.
“You don’t care that I’m gay? And you want to help me? You aren’t making fun of me…”
I stopped my frantic sticking for a moment. I started directly into his eyes and saw how hurt he seemed.
“Oswald.” My voice was low.
“Yes?”
“Whoever made you feel like it wasn’t ok to be you, is going to have to deal with me. We’ll work on your confidence, but I can assure you I’m not making fun of you. I simply want to see you, and my friend both happy. Is that such a crime?”
He shook his head.
“So it really doesn’t bother you that I’m gay?”
I took in a deep breath, trying to calm myself. I think he took notice when my grip tightened on his hands. He gave them a gentle squeeze.
“Tell me who told you that was a problem.” I said.
“Pardon?”
“I want names Oswald. Nobody gets to be homophobic and get away with it. I’ll send Y/N after them, that should teach them not to mess with you any longer.”
“Really, employing my assassin to harm someone, what would Jim think?”
I chuckled.
“I’m not as innocent as I seem Oswald, you should know better than to judge a book by its cover. Besides, why would I have a problem with you being gay? I may have a crush on the most average man in the world, and god, sometimes I wish I didn’t. But I’ve been with girls before Ozzy, sometimes I think I’d even prefer their company. They are far more gentle, and they actually listen when you speak”.
I giggled when his jaw dropped. I closed it with my hand on his chin.
“Carful now, you’ll catch flies. We don’t want the mayor choking to death in my apartment now do we?”
He rolled his eyes. I jumped when my laundry alarm went off.
“I hate to cut this short, but if I’m going to attend the Gala tomorrow i need to finish my chores… and go find a dress.”
“Of course, my dear. Don’t let me keep you.”
Oswald and I said our goodbyes and I smiled fondly at the flowers he had given me. I pulled out my phone, bringing up Ivy’s number.
Maggie:
Hate to bother you Pepper, but you’re the best dressed person I know. I need fashion advice… ASAP
An: To be continued 😈 I can’t wait to see how Oswald and Maggie’s friendship grows. And will Jim finally stop being a dick and ask this woman out?
