Opening to Queries

I reopen to queries tomorrow! I'll be open for one week to start, then will reopen again when I've responded to all queries in that first batch. I've updated my submission guidelines page so be sure to read through in advance if you'd like to query. Looking forward to seeing everyone's work!

Just curious, have you gotten through your March '17 queries yet?

Ha, I wish! No, they build up too quickly for that; even working through them weekly, I still haven’t gotten to the start of March yet. I will actually be closing to queries at the end of this month in order to catch up on the backlog.

Hi there. I saw on your submission guidelines that as of June, you prefer to keep your submissions open preferentially to marginalized voices, and will be open to others' submissions at another time. I would prefer to support this effort and make space for these voices; what would be an appropriate timeframe for me to consider submitting if I would also like to seek representation? Thanks so much for honoring that request! It is helping me catch up on my backlog of submissions, and I hope to be closer to the mythical Inbox Zero in the next couple of months. I’m not sure yet when I’ll fully reopen to all submissions, but I will certainly announce it on all of my platforms when I do! It will most likely be sometime in early autumn.

Closed to Queries

I am now closed to queries until further notice! I will be catching up on all queries and requested fulls, so if you are waiting on a response, don’t worry--it’s coming. I will update once I have an ETA for reopening queries. Thanks for your patience, everybody!

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take you to read a manuscript once you've requested it? I know some literary agents will take up to a year to respond to some.

I’m really trying not to take that long but I do have to prioritize client manuscripts, requested revisions, manuscripts with competing offers of representation, and a whole raft of other things, so unfortunately I can’t always go in chronological order. I think I’ve had a couple for six months at this point? The thing to remember is that agents have entirely full work days and generally only have time to read requested manuscripts in their free time, i.e.: evenings and weekends. As we are only human, this is understandably exhausting, and sometimes we have to take breaks to watch TV, spend time with friends, read books just for fun, and otherwise maintain our mental health.

Hello all, and apologies for the unannounced hiatus! It’s been a busy month settling into a new apartment and new city, but I’ve also been using the time to aggressively catch up on queries and the like. Here’s what’s coming up:

Weekly Workshops are starting back up, with one already scheduled for this Friday.

I have a huge backlog of answered asks queued up, so if you sent me an ask a while back, keep an eye on this space.

I am now officially caught up with queries through November! As a reminder, I was closed for December and January, so any queries submitted during that time were deleted. I’ve started on February queries and will be catching up over the next month. 

We now return to your regularly scheduled queue. :)

Submissions Closed

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your queries! I am now closing submissions until mid to late June so that I can catch up on manuscripts. The exception is pop culture nonfiction--if you have something in this space, particularly related to fandom or internet culture, I would love to see it. Any submissions already received will be replied to within the next week or two.

I will make another post announcing when general submissions are reopened, so watch this space! And I of course remain open to any questions you might have about the agenting or publishing process; just drop a line in the askbox.
