As much as Renly knows how to deal with people, and their emotions, seeing someone crying always makes him uncomfortable. It makes sense, he supposes, for who is comfortable  dealing with weeping? And even though he knows how to deal with it, he knows how to be soft and look caring, comforting, he will take anger over sadness every time, probably because he has been used to it  — in his family, no one cried.

Under the new administration, Arkham has been more boring than anything else. The ‘therapy’ mostly includes group talks, where people complain, or the meds that Ed selectively takes ( the OCD one does help, but the rest? they seem to work like sedatives, and he does not want that). The lack of books and any proper stimulation has led him to do something he wouldn’t normally do: talk to people. But even that proves to be boring after a while, since most of the inmates (sorry, patients) are lunatics, idiots or both.

The most interesting person, and perhaps closer to his level, seems to be Crane. He is crazy, but Ed has realised that he should really lower his standards.  And so, he approaches him, sitting across him on the table. Ed leans forward grinning, hand on the table.❝ What has no hands, but might knock on your door and you better open up if it does? ❞

Not with Renly, at least. So he gives him a grin, ready to listen to whatever the other has to say.
