The New 52′s Zero Issues: Week One Round Up

DC Comics is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the New 52 by releasing Zero issues, line wide, to fill in some key backstories and drop hints to what year two might entail for these titles. We wanted to take a look at each week’s releases and attempt to see themes, patterns, or trends in them, as well as assess the success of the issues on an individual level, and as a line. Also, every #1 issue of the initial New 52 had a Pandora sighting, so we wanted to see if this trend was going to continue with the #0s, so we scoured as hard as we could to try and spot her if she was there. So, without any further ado: Week 1!

Ryan Browne’s Blast Furnace Heads To Kickstarter

Last year, Ryan Browne launched an improvised webcomic called “Blast Furnace,” in which he drew a new page in an hour five days a week for a year with no plot, no script, no direction and tons of attitude. The result was pure comic madness in the best of ways, telling a story (sort of) in which a man with a brutal mustache and a flaming tie named Blast Furnace caused mayhem and got involved with — and this is a direct quote from Ryan — “horribly burned criminal owls, melted adulterous security guards, dragon bartenders, 70′s turtles, lil’ draculas, evil rabbit police chiefs and a Native American warrior who looks just like a horse, but actually he’s just a hideously deformed man.”

We figure it might help to let you guys know what’s coming out this week in comics, so welcome to our weekly feature! Our reviews come out Thursday (with perhaps some advances for tomorrow if you’re lucky), so be sure to look over this list to get a preview of what we may or may not be reviewing tomorrow. We’ve added all of our own personal recommendations into this list as well, so be on the look out for bolded titles. Whenever you see one of those, it means we think you should be reading it. Valiant Prepares For New Villains

Valiant has been doing a series of teasers to launch some of the things coming with their relaunch this year, and they’ve all been pretty great (especially the return of Ninjak!). But now, as a twist from the past look at heroes reborn, we’re now given the look at two villains who will be joining the Valiantverse.
