Hiiiii! I just don't see Korean study books and all in my future anymore (I had a list of books I wanted), so do you have any advice on how to fully learn Korean online?? I mean obviously I need to mix up my resources and whatnot, but is there like a full course kind of thing I can use to learn Korean that's free?
Hi~
I cannot recommend Quick Korean enough!
It’s a free online Korean course made by Korea University. Basically it is a series of video lessons that span from learning the hanguel through to TOPIK level 4 grammar and expressions.
You can read a more detailed explanation here; or read my level 2 review here.
Another popular method is following the free lessons on Talk to Me in Korean.
What: Quick Korean is a free online lecture series by the Cyber University of Korea. There are four levels which roughly cover the same material as TOPIK levels 1-4.
How Many? There are 30 lectures which are around 25 minutes each. So roughly 12.5 hours all up.
How Long Does It Take? It took me three weeks to complete. However this depends a lot on how much spare time you have, if you stop to take notes and how much of the material you already know.
What is the Format? Each lesson there is two key grammar points and a lesson theme e.g weather, making plans, school life etc. There is a key dialogue for each lesson which is explained in detail and will include the key grammar points.
Good Points:
- Lots of listening practice. Level 2 is taught entirely in Korean (English subtitles are available).
- Lots of useful examples.
- Explains sources of common confusion.
- Extra vocab is introduced at the end.
Negatives:
- Extra listening section often seemed excessively difficult.
- Grammar explanations were sometimes lacking.
- I didn’t find the foreign helper reading aloud helpful (would have rather had silence to read by myself.)
How to Find? You can either search ‘Quick Korean’ on Youtube and find the playlist. Or you can register on their website [here]. The benefit of registering is that after watching all of the lectures you can take a test and if you pass you receive a certificate.
Extra: If you want to know more about the test itself click [here]
