It's Princess that notices first, then naturally, Perlah.
They're both at central, talking about a particularly troublesome patient, when Princess nudges Perlah, switching to tagalog nearly mid-sentence.
"Look," Princess murmurs from the side of her mouth, eyes focused solely on their new little nurse, Emma Nolan, and one medical intern, Joy Kwon. "I think they're flirting."
Perlah looks up as subtly as she can, taking in the sight of Joy smiling something both amused, and confident. Emma looks like she's blushing a little, her smile a little bashful. "What do you think they're saying?" She whispers in tagalog.
Princess narrows her eyes a little, lower lip getting caught between teeth as she concentrates. "I can't tell what Joy said, but I think Emma is thanking her. It's hard to read their lips from here. Not so hard to see the blush on her face, though." She grins wickedly over at Perlah, who smirks back.
"Who and or what are we gossiping about today, ladies?" A new voice sounds between them, startling them both. They turn their heads simultaneously to see Dr. Santos, grinning knowingly.
Both women turn their heads back in the direction of Joy and Emma, Santos following their gaze and grinning even wider. "Oh shit, Faline and the resident black cat are flirting?"
"Faline?" Perlah asks, confusion furrowing her brows.
Santos rolls her eyes. "Yeah, you know--– from Bambi? The Disney movie? His little doe girlfriend or whatever? Never mind," she waves her hand dismissively as both Perlah and Princess look at her with matching expressions of bemusement. "Anyway, makes sense. Opposites attract, all that gay shit. The cynical asshole falls for the bright and shiny one. Classic."
Princess shares a look with Perlah, knowing and amused. "Speaking of, I heard you and Dr. King were getting kind of----" Perlah starts, only to be abruptly cut off.
"You calling me a cynical asshole, Perlah?" Santos crosses her arms and raises a brow.
Perlah and Princess speak at the same time, now. "If the shoe fits." "You said it, not me."
Santos huffs. "I mean, yeah I'm self-aware, but I'm not dating Mel King. And this isn't about me anyway." She nods in Emma and Joy's direction, smiling a little as Joy's hand lifts to gently squeeze Emma's arm before she turns to head toward a patient's room.
Emma turns to head in their direction, and all three women jump to look for something to pretend to be doing. Perlah quickly picks up a lone Ipad and points at the blank screen as if to show both Princess and Santos something on it.
"And that's why, if there's no flared base, you shouldn't put it in your space…" Santos says, and Perlah chokes on a laugh, while Princess snorts.
"Wise words to live by, Dr. Santos." Princess says, grinning.
Emma's brows raise well above her hairline. "D-do people put things in---"
Santos grins. "Oh yeah. Huckleberry and I have a good game of Ass Bingo going. I just need two more before I have Bingo. Do you wanna know----"
"No!" Perlah and Princess say in unison. Santos shrugs in a suit-yourself manner, before turning to head toward the patient boards.
Princess smiles and leans forward just slightly. "No, we wanna know what Joy said to you. She's usually so prickly."
Emma flushes and shrugs. "N-nothing, really. Just complimented the way I handled our patient. And I don't know why people say that. She's always very nice to me."
Perlah and Princess share a grin. "Right. Of course."
Before Emma can respond, Dana comes up on the opposite side of the counter and leans a hip into it, a brow quirked as she gives them each a stern look from beneath her glasses.
"Ladies, I hope we're at least talkin' about patient care while we're standing around…" The girls all look at each other with matching looks of guilt. "Scatter! Do somethin' productive!"

It's not as if Dana hadn't noticed how much more chipper Emma had been. She was always bubbly and kind, but something -– or rather someone had her young nurse smiling just a little brighter, and blushing more often than not.
Dana knew who it was, had seen Joy Kwon's gaze linger on Emma as she passed by. It was cute, really. She liked Joy, too. The girl took absolutely no shit from anyone. She especially liked her after Joy had yelled at a patient on Emma's behalf.
Some drunk frat boy had gotten too handsy with Emma.
Dana had been about to step in after witnessing the frat boy pinch poor Emma's bottom as she tried to take his vitals, but before she could do anything, there was medical intern Joy Kwon, slapping his hand away with a look of pure disgust and something else Dana couldn't quite read.
She then proceeded to ream him a new asshole in that quiet, controlled way that made her seem ten feet tall, rather than just 5'4. Suffice it to say, the frat guy was perfectly polite for the rest of his time in the ED and kept his hands to himself. Dana had to keep herself from laughing every time she watched Kwon go into his room, because he kept his head down every time, looking genuinely frightened.
So yes, Dana liked Kwon. And she liked that she was kind to Emma.
She sighs, staring out at the ambulance bay and considering a cigarette, when she hears gentle footsteps coming up behind her. For half a second, her body tenses, but she relaxes when she realizes it's Emma walking up beside her.
"Hey, kid. Need somethin'?"
Emma shakes her head. "No, just wanted a little air. Still a little…" She trails off, wringing her hands together, but Dana knows what she's talking about it.
"Sure, it's only natural. Thank goodness for Kwon, eh?" Dana nudges Emma's elbow knowingly. "She really put the fear'a god into him. I like her. She's got moxie."
Emma's cheeks turn a soft, pretty shade of pink as she chuckles nervously. "Yeah. I-–I kind of froze, but she just kind of… swooped in. She said I need to learn to stand up for myself."
Dana hums. "I gotta agree with her there, kiddo. We can be kind, and empathetic, but people should not mistake your kindness for weakness. It's okay to stand up for yourself, Emma."
Emma nods, fiddling with her stethoscope. "Sometimes I think maybe I'm too soft to be here."
Dana wraps an arm around Emma and smiles softly. "Oh, sweetheart. There's bravery in bein' soft. You know how much strength it takes to continue to be kind and gentle when the world chews you up and spits you back out? Never change if you can help it. Don't let this world take away your light. We need people--– nurses like you. You just gotta find that balance. Be soft, but take no shit."
Emma laughs softly, leaning into Dana's gentle side hug. "Maybe Joy can teach me how to take no shit."
A smirk plays across Dana's lips as she releases Emma in favor of looking her over. "Yeah, and maybe you can help with her snarky bedside manner," Dana's grin grows as Emma smiles something almost bashful. "How long she been flirtin' with ya?"
Emma straightens, eyes widening. "F-flirting?" She squeaks, and Dana tilts her head slightly. "You think she's flirting with me?"
Dana's expression shifts to something that resembles pity, but borders on affection.
"Oh, you sweet summer child," Dana says on the tail end of an amused sigh. "C'mon, I might be old, but I got eyes. That girl likes you. She's a stray cat, hissin' at anyone who gets too close… except you. She likes you, kiddo." Dana watches as Emma seems to get lost in thought, and she suspects the poor girl is going over every interaction she's had so far with Kwon.
"Oh," she finally says. Then she meets Dana gaze, uncertainty clouding her usual chipper expression. "W-what do I do with that information?"
"What do you---" Dana blinks. "Well I don't know, that depends on how you feel about her. I can't tell you want to do. Just gotta follow your heart. I will say, I think you're good for each other, as friends or otherwise."
Emma seems to consider her words, before she nods, a look of determination overtaking her features. "Right. Thanks, Dana."
Dana smiles. "Anytime, kiddo. Anytime."
\\
Emma's heart feels like a hummingbird's wings with how fast it beats. She almost thinks to go back into the ED to check her blood pressure. That would be silly though. She's fine. Totally fine, just nervous. Joy makes her nervous anyway. She had thought it was because Joy could be intimidating, but after talking with Dana today, she's starting to wonder if maybe she'd just been attracted to Joy the entire time.
"Well, if it isn't Nurse Butterfingers." A smooth voice says behind her. Emma startles, turning to see the object of her thoughts coming up beside her. Joy gives her that same confident smirk that makes Emma wonder what the other is thinking about.
"I'm never going to live that down, huh?" Emma chuckles, thinking of her first day and dropping the vial of blood she'd drawn from Joy's arm. It being crushed under the wheel of a bed had really been the icing on the cake.
"No," Joy says simply. Then she looks out to the parking lot and back to Emma. "You waiting for someone? Why haven't you left, yet? Pretty sure I saw you do a quick handover-–figured you'd have been on your way home by now."
Emma huffs out a nervous little breath. "Actually, I was waiting on you."
The corner of Joy's lips quirk up. "Oh yeah?" She steps a little closer to Emma as she meets her gaze. "Well, I'm here. What's up?"
Emma swallows the sudden dryness in her throat, mind suddenly going blank. She'd had a whole speech prepared, but with the way Joy was looking at her, Emma couldn't remember a single thing she had planned to say.
"I uh-–well," Emma takes a breath. "Have you been flirting with me?"
Joy's smirk grows into a full blown smile, clearly amused. "God, you're so cute," She shakes her head slightly as Emma's face heats up. "I thought that was obvious, babe. I thought you seemed pretty receptive, but-– it's hard to tell with you, because I wasn't sure if you were just being polite, but you also never turned your nose up at me. Do you want me to stop? It's okay if you do. No hard feelings, I swear."
Emma reacts immediately, hardly giving Joy a chance to finish the last of her sentence. "No! I mean-– I don't want you to stop, I uh-– I guess everyone but me realized you were flirting. I've never been good at it anyway."
Joy tilts her head slightly as she studies Emma's expression. Then she reaches up to brush a strand of loose hair behind Emma's ear. "So, you don't want me to stop flirting with you. Does that mean you'd consider going on a date with me?"
Emma's smile is bright and earnest. "I'd love to. Let me give you my number, and we can talk about it later. I know it's been a long day, and I don't want to keep you."
"Do give me your number, but don't ever think you're keeping me from anything. Any time spent with you is worth being kept," Joy's smile turns soft now. "Give me your phone, babe."
Emma's stomach swoops low at the term of endearment as she pulls her phone from her scrub pocket and unlocks it before handing it to Joy.
Joy taps a few buttons, grinning to herself, before she hands the phone back to Emma. "Sent myself a text so I have your number."
Emma looks down at her phone and laughs softly at the message.
Save this number as Butterfingers.
"Call me later tonight?" Emma asks, a hopeful lilt to her voice.
Joy nods. "Will do, Butterfingers. Looking forward to it."
And with that, Joy gives her a little finger wave before she disappears into the parking lot.
Emma exhales, shaking her head at herself. Then, as if a fire has been lit under her ass, she scurries off into the opposite direction to her car. She wanted to be showered and full of takeout before her phone call with Joy.
Later, when the date has been decided upon and heavy flirting has bounced back and forth between them, after she's hung up, a smile will etch itself across her countenance. And it will stay there, growing every time she talks to Joy.
And Joy? Well, her coworkers will realize that Joy is fully capable of actually smiling, but only if she's looking at nurse Emma.
Ive been re¹⁰-reading some are wild/quickshot, and it finally hit me. This omegaverse is extrememly cat-shaped. It's such a fresh take on it that it took me a while to notice that it's not a wolf/dog framing, but damn.
They are so feline coded (the purring, the clawing, the way their territoriality shows).
It has no business having this much of a chokehold on me when im not a cat person by long miles lmao
Idk maybe im completly misreading it, but have infinite kudos from me, it's incredible.
🐐
HELLO SORRY I TOOK A SEC TO ANSWER LMAO. you wanna know something stupid? i don't think i ever once considered what "genre" of animal i was doing lol.
i've seen a fair few fics now where alphas purr so i guess my brain no longer goes "purring = cat thing." i also added the claws bc i needed another way to disrupt the soft sweet omega trope thing. all of this culminated in me not once thinking "ok i'm doing it cat-style." BUT YOURE SO RIGHT LMAO.
we are a cat only household so this is probably why it all just kind of fell into that for me lmfao. it's so...fucking obvious in hindsight that that's what i was doing. holy shit. how did i not notice.
even in "quickshot" you can see a mild amount of confusion bc i have Wilson doing the Dog Thing of pacing a circle before settling down. even this, however, can be observed in cats, too. god, i catcoded my dogboys. HOW DID I NOT NOTICE!! I WROTE THE DAMN THING!!!
thank you so much for the ask. it's caused me to go into hysterics every time i've seen it in my inbox bc oh my god. hhhh my god. how did i not even once stop to maybe think about it. lmaooooo
She's Hiccups twin sister! I slyed her after Valka a bit since vikings passed down their clothes to other generations most of the time. And keeping the tradition of the braids. I'm planning on making more designs of her like RTTE,httyd2 and httyd3 designs.
Her Deadly Nadder is named Quickshot! In my version of the movie, Stormfly was paired with another Deadly Nadder during dragon training and that they are bonded. Deadly Nadders are more social dragons.
Then she also has the little Terrible Terror from dragon training as well, which I don't have a name for yet. He grabs her to try and lift Sniff up or catch her if she falls off of something. He may be little, but he for sure tries.
I heard Valka and Stoik always wanted a younger sibling for Hiccup, but due to incidents that never became possible so I ended up making her myself!
