Topi’s Daily Card #1131: Quicksilver Elemental
This card has recently gotten a bit of a jump in popularity thanks to this year’s commander set, more specifically Mairsil. With Mairsil out, or even with the elemental exiled, you’d have access to a whole suite of abilities and not have to worry about off colored mana as long as you have enough blue. With both of them on the battlefield, you can copy Mairsil’s abilities and lose the ‘once per turn’ restriction, leading to a chain of abilities that could end the game if you stack it right. With the Elemental Exiled, Mairsil could target himself, gain new iterations of those activated abilities, then use the new Quicksilver Elemental Activation to do it again. Quicksilver Elemental has become awesome tech for Mairsil decks, and if you can play it right, can let you combo out for the win much easier than without.
If I cage a Quicksilver Elemental with Mairsil and use it's first ability targeting himself, does this effectively remove the "once per turn" restriction on Mairsil?
No.
Mairsil gains new extra copies of all of his activated abilities, but any such abilities gained from cards Mairsil’s first ability has exiled will still have the once-per-tun restriction. (This lets you activate each such ability twice now. Once for the original and once for the copy gained from Quicksilver Elemental’s ability.)
However, Mairsil does gain an extra Quicksilver Elemental ability this way too, and so you can buy additional sets of activations for U apiece by activating each new Quicksilver Elemental ability in turn targeting Mairsil.
If a planeswalker becomes a creature and I target it with Quicksilver Elemental, does Quicksilver Elemental gain that planeswalkers loyalty abilities and if so can I activate them any number of times, or just once on each of my turns?
Quicksilver Elemental will gain the loyalty abilities, yes, but it will only be able to use one of them (and only a + or 0 ability because it has no loyalty counters to spend) since you can only activate one loyalty ability of each permanent you control on each of your turns. The abilities themselves carry these restrictions.
May Quicksilver Elemental get the abylities of a planeswalker that became a creature, for example Gideon Jura, and may i use those abylities?
It will gain those abilities, yes, but it’s still restricted to using a single loyalty ability during each of your turns when you could normally cast a sorcery, and have to pay the appropriate costs for them. Since QE doesn’t start with loyalty counters, you’re probably limited to using the planeswalker’s + or 0 ability.
