If I play Mairsil, the Pretender and exile Nicol Bolas, the Ravager with a cage counter, does his activated ability essentially turn into an expensive flicker?
Quite the contrary, actually, as all you'll end up doing with that ability is exiling Mairsil permanently. Rule 711.8a says "If a player is instructed to put a card that isn't a double-faced card onto the battlefield transformed, that card stays in its current zone." Mairsil isn't a double-faced card and so he can't be returned to the battlefield from exile and just stays there.
Crew you!
Wanna crew?
I just want you to crew me.
My attempt at breaking Mairsil
If Mairsil, the Pretender exiles Treasure Map and activates its ability enough time to add a 3rd landmark counter, does Mairsil "transform", and what happens if it does? Do you create the treasure tokens?
Mairsil won’t transform but you’ll still get Treasure tokens.
When Mairsil’s copy of the Treasure Map ability resolves, the ability will do as much as it can. This means that you’ll scry 1 and put a landmark counter on Mairsil, then because there are three landmark counters on Mairsil, you’ll remove all landmark counters from him. You can’t transform Mairsil because he’s not a double-faced card, so that instruction can’t happen and is skipped, but you’ll still continue resolving the effect and create three Treasure tokens.
First, thank you for all that you do for the community. You are a role model for aspiring judges! My question is: if Mairsil the Pretender gains the activated ability of Riptide Replicator, and acquired some charge counters through other means, will Riptide Replicator's ability be able to produce tokens, even though a creature type and color were never chosen?
Mairsil doesn’t have Riptide Replicator’s “choose a color and creature type” ability. When Mairsil uses Riptide Replicator’s ability, there’s no color or type chosen and so the token will be colorless with no creature types.
If I cage a Quicksilver Elemental with Mairsil and use it's first ability targeting himself, does this effectively remove the "once per turn" restriction on Mairsil?
No.
Mairsil gains new extra copies of all of his activated abilities, but any such abilities gained from cards Mairsil’s first ability has exiled will still have the once-per-tun restriction. (This lets you activate each such ability twice now. Once for the original and once for the copy gained from Quicksilver Elemental’s ability.)
However, Mairsil does gain an extra Quicksilver Elemental ability this way too, and so you can buy additional sets of activations for U apiece by activating each new Quicksilver Elemental ability in turn targeting Mairsil.
So I was looking at the new commander mairsil the pretender and I was hoping for clarification on his interaction with mirage mirror. If he exiles the mirror with his ability and then uses the copy ability to turn into a copy of himself would then be able to activate any of the abilities he had already activated due to the copy effects new layer? I hope this makes sense haha. Thanks in advance!
When Mairsil becomes a copy of something with Mirage Mirror’s ability, it loses its own abilities and thus won’t have access to the abilities of any cards it has caged until the copy effect from Mirage Mirror’s ability wears off in the cleanup step.
Technical Layers Talk: The copy effect from Mirage Mirror applies in Layer 1, which is long before Mairsil would gain any abilities from his own ability in Layer 6. That ability ceased to exist once the copy effect was applied in Layer 1.
