How do you feel about Rick Riordan's characterization of the Greek vs Roman gods?
It’s been years since I read either Percy Jackson or the Heroes of Olympus follow up series. Due to this, my memory of the characterizations is very, very fuzzy. But what I do remember is that he went along the route of “The Roman gods are just Greek ones with different names” and clearly that rubs me the wrong way.
From what I remember as a kid, they mostly felt a bit bland and boring. I can definitely tell he did his research, but as a kid who had studied myths long before every picking up Percy Jackson, there was always something a bit lacking in the characterizations. If I had to try and pinpoint what it is that bothered me, it’s that they all felt rather one-note. There were attempts to give them depth but they all fell pretty flat for me, even then.
I didn’t particularly care from Kronos as a villain, but it made sense. Gaia, though...now that bothers me to this day.
