Finished up the third block in the charity quilt...that makes it a quarter of the way done. Time flies. This block turned out...ok. As mentioned, the fabric line is one I'm having a challenge working with - and that's a good thing! It's different from what I normally work with, which makes this a learning experience. In this months block, I originally planned to play up the oranges and blacks. However, the fabric I selected for the background is a tad too busy and doesn't, well, become a background. The accent black edge pieces become a bit lost in the background; a different color would have played nicer there. I pulled all three charity blocks out for this line and looked at them side by side - they look nice, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the blocks as they are made continue to tie the fabrics in the quilt together. When it comes to piecing the final quilt top, I'm going to go with an on-point design...think that would best fit these sampler blocks. Block 2, for February, is all done! This is such a unique fabric line...I'm really starting to enjoy working with it. In creating this Double Edged Star (pattern by @13spools), I really wanted to create a block focused around the black butterfly fabric. It has such a deep black background, and the butterflies appear to, well, fly! I *had* to fussy cut this one, as the larger spaces were perfect for each of those lovely butterflies. The peach flower fabric worked wonderfully for the points in the star, as they echoed the floral design in the butterfly perfectly. To complete the star look, I cut the directional striped fabrics so that the lines moved in a consistent direction across all four smaller blocks. Joining in the @thequiltersplanner sampler bock quilt-a-long...though at a more relaxed pace of just one block per month. This is January's block - pattern by @michellebartholomew and fabrics ("The Emperor's Garden") by @maywoodstudio. It seemed the perfect block for the fabric line; doesn't it look like the sun bursting through the clouds? Perfect for this garden quilt.
