OG, Quinto and Disco: A Spock Comparison
Written after seeing this excellent post written by @faeymouse. I tried to reblog the original post with my tags but I got a little bit wordy and ran out of tags. I do that sometimes. Hence this post.
When I compare the three iterations of Spock I love best, I think of voice, appearance, and mannerisms. Don’t worry, I’m not going to blather on about everything because @faeymouse covered some of that. I’m going to consider instead 1) the ta’al and 2) the ears. They’re my favorite things, okay? This isn’t scientific or anything, relax.
The Ta’al
OG Spock has the most natural ta’al of the three. Nimoy had beautiful hands to begin with and when Spock uses the gesture, his movements are very smooth and natural-appearing. He looks like someone who has been throwing up a ta’al from a very young age, which of course, Spock has.
Quinto Spock, ehhhh. The gesture appears very stiff and almost painful, but I know Quinto had trouble with it in RL so he gets a pass. Disco Spock has a decent ta’al, if a bit stiff, but I will forever think of the mountain promo when I see him using the gesture, so that colors my appreciation a bit.
The Ears
Is it weird that Vulcan ears are my favorite? Okay, maybe it’s weird. Pointed ears were never my thing as a young kid or a teenager. I didn’t care much about fairies or elves or pixies or any other fantastical creatures. Then I laid eyes on my first Vulcan and I was a goner. No idea what that says about me and I’m not going to try to figure it out. I will just enjoy.
When TOS was filmed, the appearance of OG Spock’s ears was limited by the prosthetic makeup abilities of the time. They certainly improved during the movie era and through his appearances on TNG and Star Trek 2009, although they remained a bit, well, chunky? And don’t get me wrong, the TOS ears were decent in certain lighting. And in other lighting, I cringe and tell myself DON’T LOOK AT THE EARS DON’T LOOK AT THE EARS because the demarcation line between prosthetic and natural ear is very obvious.
Now, Quinto Spock’s ears? OH MY GOODNESS. There is one scene in particular, following the emotional breakdown/Kirk beatdown, when Spock is walking through the corridors after removing himself from command. When he passes a crewman on a ladder, the light falls across him and I swear I can see the light turning the pinna transparent for just a moment. It’s probably just a lighting trick, but it was so realistic.
Disco Spock’s ears? Ehh, not a fan. They are probably the most detailed of the three, but the extra detail throws me off. There is, for lack of a better term, extra business going on at the peak of the ear. There’s another entire concha, right near the pointed tip. Since the concha serves to funnel sound into the external auditory canal and there’s no auditory canal up there, it’s useless. And a little ugly. Unless maybe it is used for direction finding in a desert environment, idk.
(Don’t get me started on the hair, especially SNW Spock’s hair. Let Spock have curls. Thank you.)
