quirkinitup answered your question “Serious question here”
My instinct is to say het trans women because there's a lot of transmisogyny in some cis lesbian circles, but why do you ask?
Well, in the wake of a lot of recent events, I’ve constantly found myself having to ask some variation of this question when I form my politics.
Like when the SCOTUS gay marriage decision happened, I was asked to think of my cis lesbian sisters and silence my concerns over it heralding the end of a lot of focus on trans issues, since it fit into a “the fight is over” narrative.
I’ve been called bi and acephobic by sga cis women because supposedly, if I don’t support bi/ace men, then I don’t support bi/ace trans women.
I’ve been coerced into participating in polarizing discourse which pits me against other trans women who, on topics that actually directly affect us, I am on the same side of.
I’ve basically been called upon by cis lgb people over and over again to side with group of trans women x over group y for how they engage with other people in the lgbt “community”, and I’m sick of it.
Basically, I posed this question as a way to see if I can orient myself towards any other conclusion than directly asking myself “wtf is the point of the lgbt community anyway?”, something which upholds a dichotomy of straight v gay, when really, the sine qua non of our struggles is cis v trans (itself an oversimplification), and it’s a joke to claim that, because the T is there, that the whole acronym is in support of it when it really isn’t.
I’m frankly tired of being a pawn in cis people’s bids for institutional power, so like, yeah, I ask more or less because it’s a priming question in order to state that, at this point, I reject being included in the “lgbt community”, and reject its organizational politics.
They wanna talk about dropping the T? Well, this T is doing it for them. I am someone who is targeted by transmisogyny, and that is as broad a category as I am willing to enter into, and if you are het, gay, bi, pan, ace, poly, or whatever else, if your experience with it is as someone who is also targeted by transmisogyny, then I will organize with you. Otherwise, I’m not interested.
