Bookbinding: Quriosity by dr.girlfriend (me)

This was my first start-to-finish bind! Someone on the Renegade server very generously offered me the typeset, but I realized if I didn't typeset this one myself I would probably never take the plunge and learn Affinity. So, here it is, an absolutely Basic Bitch typeset but I love it. Details after the cut.

This bind was plagued with issues, the worst being when I had the text block printed, sewn, trimmed, prepared, and painted, and as I was going through separating the pages after edge-painting I realized only TWO PAGES out of one signature were backwards, making multiple pages out of order. It took me a bit to gather up the wherewithal to start from scratch, but with the final version the only thing that went wrong was a slip of the cutting wheel when cutting the endpaper, which resulted in me picking a new endpaper, but this one I actually ended up liking better and was a lot thicker so it was probably a blessing in disguise.

Printed on Warm White Church short-grain, in black and white settings. Bookcloth is Japanese bookcloth from Hollander's, in I believe the blue-silver, and it is super beautiful and luxurious-feeling. HTV is girafvinyl from Amazon in Silver, but it's a matte silver. Edges painted with acrylic silver paint watered-down slightly; it doesn't photograph well but is more metallic in person.

The book actually includes both Quriosity and its smaller sequel, The Bloody Office.

Been holding onto some books - simple designs mostly, as my goal has been to get my backlog of textblocks from binderary completed.

Some new things were done - I made my first quarto and first cut-out. I bound Sigh No More by @dhampir72 - which was an exercise in persistence (and frustration).

I was inspired by the themes of the fic - about loneliness and welcome homes and the setting of the fic partly taking place in planes and airports, and wanted to make a cutout reminiscent of a plane window. the fic ends on such a bittersweet, pensive note that i tried to emulate that in the bind.

However, i was stymied so many times by the frigging cutout- the bind was so cursed because i tore the cut out so many times. i don't have a colour printer and was forced to make two trips to do my printing on a colour printer. i used handmade (and by that, i mean by me) marbled paper that I made in a marbling class as my endpapers. they don't necessarily match, but i love the non-pareil pattern and i so badly wanted to use it.

I also used french double core endbands - matching the insert's colours - had some good fun with it - though i have been very rusty and don't quite remember the steps for endbands. I also used some lovely duo elster supplied by @pleasantboatpress when we did a bind trade, we also traded bookcloth and resources and i love this colour of duo!

My other bind, a bind i did post binderary before i took a long break was the traceability series by @blackidyll.

I had some issues with over-pressing hence the distortion of some of the finer lines of the cover. i had been playing with heat-reactive HTV over the font title (inspired by @nodeadfandoms who used heat-reactive HTV in their binds in such a cool way), but unfortunately the silver and grey doesn't have much contrast when i run my finger along the HTV.

Made with Japanese bookcloth - blue from hollanders, this bookcloth is quite a favourite of mine though it's really backed so thinly with paper.

For my last book bound during Binderary - I bound Quriosity by @drgrlfriend.

As mentioned I kinda fumbled the HTV as I decided to use a different brand of HTV (Cricut Foil vs Siser), which had some issues adhering. It's definitely not perfect, but I had some fun with the original Bond design on the cover and using lines as a theme for the design aspects of the fic. I've also discovered my near unhealthy obsession with tall vertical looking fonts - i am not sorry.

I used purple silk moire cloth, which has a lovely sheen, though i think that colibri will always hold my heart.

I still have 9 more text blocks to go - am working towards trying out some marbled edges or foil edges in the future - have two flatbacks ready for some experimental 'fuck around and find out' treatment.

Life has been a little ridiculous recently, so it's likely my binding for the next couple of months will proceed at a glacial and erratic pace - a good deal of apologies to the people i've promised author copies, it might take a while.

In contrast to his crisp dry English, Q's pronunciation of the French words was fluid and flawless, the throaty tone of the fricatives sending a surprising jolt of awareness straight to Bond's cock — all the more remarkable given his degree of blood loss.

"You're wasted on Q-branch, you have the voice for a phone-sex call-in line." The words slipped out of Bond's mouth without forethought, although he had plenty of time to think in the sudden pause that came afterward and stretched on for endless moments. Bond hadn't realized until now how Q was always there, with an immediate reply. In all their banter Q had never before been at a loss for words. Ever.

Bookmarker's Notes:

How much do I love this fic? So much I read it twice in a row almost a year ago + have kept a number of scenes from it inside my All Time Faves vault. Come meet James who early on crosses one of Q's boundaries + cannot figure out why what he's done is a problem. Then when he does, he wants to go all Double-O on some people when really what Q needs is the emotional safety James chooses to provide him. 

It's a delight to watch this Q + James begin a friendship which grows into more with some design parameters James is more than happy to work within. There are many sexy times which are deliciously erotic + creative. Witnessing James' emotional growth throughout the story is a whole other layer of enjoyment. 

This is one of those fics where reading @drgrlfriend 's responses to comments give you further insights into the characters, so make sure you read them too. ENJOY READER!

OMG, I am on chapter 3 of Quriosity and it is INCREDIBLE. Like watching a Bond film only better.

@ghuzz18 - Thank you for your lovely messages.  Unfortunately it won’t let me send you a message or ask to reply -- I’m not sure if it’s because you recently created the Tumblr or because it’s marked NSFW.  Either way, I welcome translation of any of my works, as long as 1.) You post to AO3 as well as to any other site and list it as a “related work”; 2.) You don’t post to any for-profit site; and 3.)
