DuckDuckGo 💝🌐

An American-based search engine that gets its own results. Many search engines are essentially a reskin of Google or Bing (usually with added privacy features) that piggyback off of their results. DuckDuckGo gets its own results and focuses on user privacy.

Qwant 💝🌐

A privacy-focused French-based search engine that usually gives results similar to Bing's. Qwant is essentially a reskin of Bing with added privacy features.

Brave 💝🌐

A privacy-focused search engine that gets its own results. Previously, it used Bing's results, but not currently. Be advised that Brave supports cryptocurrency.

Ecosia 💝🌐

Privacy-wise, this browser is on the same level as the mainstream browsers, and it uses their results. However, they use their profits to plant trees and help the environment, and are pretty transparent with where their money goes, regularly sharing financial reports. As a bonus, they tell you which search engine sourced the results if you click the "⋮" button.

Looks like Qwant has gotten on the """AI""" train. They're including "flash results" (algo summary) in their results now.

So... taking suggestions for slopless search engines again, since I have been betrayed. 🙄

Do you want a web searcher like DuckDuckGo that doesn't give you back only US related business or organisms?

Try Qwant. I just discovered it. It's quite easy to use and quite fast. You can add it to Firefox. It can give you more local results as opposed to DuckDuckGo, which tends to give you US related results (also because both browsers don't keep track of your searches, so they don't personalise the results the way google does).

ok but how am i supposed to stop using google when the alternatives suck so bad

i switched to qwant but if i do a search and then click on the news tab it tells me there's no news items (this is usually when i'm 100% certain there is bc i just searched a news story i heard on the radio). i can't search by date there (i use that feature of google's search constantly). there is a drop-down where you can choose freshness but it's not very exact

i had a similar experience trying to use duck duck go

i basically end up re-running all my searches on google anyway and that's really not helpful for what i'm trying to do here

One thing that Google did that other search engines don't seem to that bugs me is that it has homepage variants for different search functions, not just the standard search. As far as I can tell, Duckduckgo and Qwant both require you to search something normally before you do an image search. I'm made a workaround by just bookmarking a fairly generic image search that can then be edited, which is marginally less annoying, but this seems like a pretty major oversight. Does it really not bother anyone else?
