Imagine my suprise when Ecosia, a browser that uses its profits for bettering the environment, also uses AI features. Yes, you opt out of them but having to go out of your way to opt out of an automatic AI feature that's on a browser designed to help the environment is contradictory, hypocritical, and truly insulting with the amount of pollution AI data centers cause

if anyone wants an alternative search engine to google and the automatic ai searches. i recommend ecosia, the only downside is that you can't have multiple profiles (or i haven't figured that out yet). it's great for the environment and ai searches are optional + they give you financial reports about how they use their money (planting trees, paying taxes, etc). thanks for listening to my ted talk.

The best alternative to Google that I’ve found is Ecosia, and the differences are insane.

Google, based in America, (1) collects user data for ads, search results, and shares it with advertisers (2) engages in lobbying and has made political donations to Trump (3) has been involved in controversies & criticism related to data privacy, government surveillance, and partnerships with fossil fuel companies.

Ecosia, based in Europe (1) does not sell user data to advertisers (2) is an ethical search engine and uses its profits for tree-planting, reforestation, and environmental projects rather than political groups (3) claims searches actually result in negative COz emissions, removing more carbon than they produce

You can use Ecosia as an app or browser for free, with the same search results as other engines. It’s important to be intentional about where you consume information, especially in a time when censorship and historical erasure are rising under Trump’s administration. Not only this, but he signed executive orders like expanding logging on 280 million acres of national forests, threatening habitats and increasing wildfire risks. Even if Google didn’t donate to Trump, it still harms the environment through its energy-hungry data centers, rapid device production fueling the e-waste crisis, and reliance on minerals tied to environmental damage and human rights abuses. Ecosia, on the other hand, offers a more ethical alternative.

Ecosia, the nonprofit search engine, just hit a HUGE milestone just before Earth-Day: 250 million native trees planted worldwide. That makes them the largest planter of native trees on the planet.

Started in 2009, they’ve built a global network of 200,000+ local planters & 125 orgs. The concept ist simple:

Your clicks & searches = ad revenue = trees.

They’ve planted 1,600+ native species, including 144 endangered ones. No greenwashing, no profit, just a company legally set up so no one (not even the founder) can take dividends. The only shareholder? The planet.

They even have a CTPO (Chief Tree Planting Officer) the only company in the world with one.

Convinced to switch? I wouldn’t advertise if it wasn’t literally making the planet better.

Hey yall just a reminder Ecosia exists and has an app and plants trees from people using it. I’m currently using the app to look up stuff related to Hellenic mythology. Idk I personally feel it’s like a little extra help for the earth and in that way a part of my practice to use my learning to help the planet.
