Lost & Found (2018) : 3/5
Jorja Smith
England is known for giving birth to outstanding* female vocalists Like Adele, Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis. And Jorja Smith is a continuation of this tradition with a potential to surpass them all.
Lost & found is a Blues, R&B, and POP driven record, sonically it’s mainly inspired by early 2000’s and 90’s R&B. It's lush and loose, yet sleek and lustrous, Jorja’s angelic voice is an instrument on its own it's dazzling and roomy channeling Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, and Natasha Bedingfield at the same time without losing her signature. On Lost and found, and thanks to her resonating vocals Jorja thrives to convey and liberate her feelings of melancholy and teen angst with anthems of solitude and gloom like “the one” “3rd February”, where she compassionately chants: “It won't work if it doesn't make sense at all /I'm so lost that I can't see through the fold/The same stains that were left from the cherry wine/The same stains that I wish we could both rewind”. However, even if she is a mine of talent and even after all the hype that preceded this record, I think that her best work is still to come. although her majestic voice manages to cover it this album is poorly written and the production is too relaxed, lavish and forgettable making it sound spurious which is unfortunate taking in consideration the storytelling flair and raw authenticity of tracks like “blue lights”.
Gimme all you got and don’t hold back
