don't you have a rather young fan? do you ever feel pressured having a super fan who's so much younger?

“i do,” he nods, his expression lightening considerably, “his name is hyunjoon. he came to our fan signing, which is how i met him the first time. he starts high school soon.”

he pauses, hearing himself speak, collects his smile, his pride, as if this fan he’s met once or twice is his own little brother that he grew up with all his life.

“it does…increase the pressure, but…it isn’t a burden.  i think maybe because you know from the beginning that, when you train, you’re training to become someone. people look up to you when you’re someone.i am sorry to him, because i’m not better than i am. i think it’s important we do feel pressured, otherwise there’d be no reason to get better and be better and work harder….for me, if people like hyunjoon are looking up to me, it’s important that i work hard to become someone worth looking up to.”

do you feel like you've missed out on anything after being a trainee for so long? has it been worth it?

“…maybe. probably,” he shrugs, an action that would be nonchalant if not for the reluctant thoughtfulness hiding behind his eyes, “but it’s worth it. and if it isn’t worth it now, it’ll be worth it soon. i have to keep persevering and working hard. there isn’t anything else i can do in the world. it has to be this. i think…whatever i’ve missed out on, i was supposed to.”

If you could pirate one trainee from each of the other agencies to join your agency, who would you take from each company and why?

“Ah...that’s difficult. A lot of trainees I really admire in other companies I think are there because they belong there, like Taemin hyung or Bobby sunbae. I’ve been following them as much as I can, because I look up to them, and I think anyone who gets to debut with them is really lucky. But I think it’d be weird for them to suddenly join Nova, just like it’d probably be weird if I suddenly joined TRC or KT. 

“I paid a lot of attention to the contestants from the last MGAs though. I kind of had to,” he breathes out the beginnings of a sheepish laugh. 

“I don’t think anyone really thinks about how hard it was to help pick teams. I don’t know how judges on those shows do it all the time. Going through everyone’s pictures was difficult. And remembering everyone’s names--But some did stick out. I remember being disappointed that we could only pick a certain number, narrowing it down was really hard!

“Ah, this kind of feels like picking teams all over again. Seulgi-ssi was one of them,” another embarrassed laugh, “I remember her right away. I thought from the beginning that she’d be a good fit for Nova, so I’m glad she did get signed somewhere, even if I think she’s a better fit here. I think she’ll do well.

“Would it be selfish of me to want Kibum hyung from Royal?” he pouts a little, thoughtfully. “He’s really good. I don’t know much about how dancers are trained at Royal but I know he’d do well at Nova. He wouldn’t have any problem keeping up. Sometimes I miss having more people like that around. I think I was also watching Byun Baekhyun during the show, so if we couldn’t have Kibum hyung, maybe Baekhyun-ssi.

“Maybe Junhong-ssi from TRC? Ah, but he’s so tall, Huidong hyung would be mad. Youngjae hyung then?

“Could we steal Miyoung-ssi from KT? I’m only joking. She’s kind of the face of KT isn’t she? Wah, but she’s so pretty though...Maybe that guy from the contest? Kim Jongdae? Only I don’t know what his dancing is like...Probably pretty good now that he’s in KT. No, we shouldn’t take anyone from KT. They’re all too good-looking, I’d never get any screen time.”

“oh, easy: charizard, machamp, rhyhorn, jolteon, solgaelo, and blastoise...or maybe wartortle because someone told me i look like a wartortle once...”

“eh??” it’s an absurd question, one he isn’t braced for in the slightest, one he has no idea what to do with. “but i wouldn’t f- with any of them- they’re men.” he shakes his head, as if that might make the question go away, but it doesn’t. “i...’d marry jun hyung i guess. if i were a girl. he was kind to me in middle school, and got rid of my bullies, like one of those characters from a drama, so i guess he’d make a good husband,” he stumbles over the word a little; he knows it doesn’t belong on his lips in this context and adds, for good measure, “if i had to.”

“i don’t want to kill anyone...” he continues reluctantly, and then, hastily, “but that doesn’t mean i’d-” he scowls, chewing on the inside of his lip, almost as if he’s in pain just from having to consider the thought. “i’d kill...jungwoo. if i ever killed daniel, mom and joohyun would never forgive me.”
