Earlier this week, the R211S finally debuted on the Staten Island Railway. Cars numbered 100-104 made a good run on the railway. Here are some photos showing the R211S in action. Enjoy!

I finally got my first R211 today! It was a delight to ride - sleek and clean, with all electronic displays (including maps and ads). And there are folding seats for wheelchair and bike access, too!

It wasn't one of the gangplank ones but I was so excited anyway.

MTA moves forward with new R211 train cars after yearlong delay

The brand-new R211 cars made their debut on the tracks at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on July 1.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled the first of its new R211 subway train cars to hit the tracks for testing at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal Thursday, July 1, after more than a year of delays.

“We waited for a while to get these R211s and the impact for the city, for our customers, for the ridership — there is just no words for it, it’s going to be amazing and we’re looking forward to getting these trains on the rails,” said Demetrius Crichlow, executive vice president of subways at MTA New York City Transit.

The new models built by Japanese manufacturer Kawasaki at their plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, will be tested by MTA starting in the coming weeks, before the Authority starts rolling out hundreds of new train cars into service between September 2022 and 2024.

The MTA has finally placed the first order for open gangway subway cars, thought to open movement and circulation within the cars. After promises of introducing open gangway cars, renderings, and life-size models over the last couple of years, the first order from Kawasaki is for twenty R211 cars. These new cars will also be able to run on the computerized signal system that is slowly being rolled out across the system. The 300 new cars from Bombardier that were taken out of service after doors started opening while moving in tunnels have still not been returned to service. Common in cities like London, Toronto, and Tokyo, the open gangway cars are expected to go into service in May 2021. Are you excited about the new cars? Got my first R211T this morning!

I walked back and forth through the gangplank a few times. It was really stable and easy to navigate, and I think it should be navigable for mobility aid users too.

Here's a video of what it's like to walk through.

Overall, these things are the closest thing we currently have to the Battle Subway in real life, so I was stoked to explore one this morning.
