The MTA has finally placed the first order for open gangway subway cars, thought to open movement and circulation within the cars. After promises of introducing open gangway cars, renderings, and life-size models over the last couple of years, the first order from Kawasaki is for twenty R211 cars. These new cars will also be able to run on the computerized signal system that is slowly being rolled out across the system. The 300 new cars from Bombardier that were taken out of service after doors started opening while moving in tunnels have still not been returned to service. Common in cities like London, Toronto, and Tokyo, the open gangway cars are expected to go into service in May 2021. Are you excited about the new cars?
