god i hate HATE THE MOVIE RAAZI

i fucking hate how meghna gulzar ruined raazi. her idea literally romanticized sehmat and iqbal and in turn letting audience romanticize sehmat and iqbal with the entire indian x Pakistani, secret spy in love thing. made it look like people were cruel to sehmat when she was training, came back to india, how she disliked her mission.

when in reality nothing was like that. sehmat was already dating a guy when she was in du. and the she doesn't get hurt while saving a bird but while doing classical dance on stage. like i get it the idea was to show her innocent girl had to do this scary mission but had she kept that classical dancing thing it would've added sm to her character in film. more so because sehmat was muslim and people didn't want her to play a hindu goddess but it was sehmat's then bf who convinced higher up to let her do that and it js shows hindu muslim kuch nahi hota. moreover that guy waited for sehmat for YEARS!!!!!

he waited for her when she was in cllg to accept his love, waited for her when she told him about her mission, waited for her even when she told him to move on, waited for her when she left, waited for her when she got married, waited for her KNOWING HOW DANGEROUS HER ROLE IS AND THAT SHE MIGHT BE THERE INDEFINITELY OR WILL DIE IF SHE GETS CAUGHT THERE, waited for her FOR YEARS till she came back, waited for her when she was pregnant with iqbal's child. and that's the thing, sehmat was SO SO SO SO shaken up after killing that servent that she moved to ambala — where the servent was originally from pre partition — that she never went back to abhi. AND THAT MAN STILL WAITED FOR HER, RAISED IQBAL'S CHILD! NEVER MARRIED FOR HER. EVEN WHEN SHE CAME BACK!!!!! because he loved her sm.

moreover, ppl weren’t cruel to her! the head of the misson — the one who told his subordinates that they need to bomb and kill sehmat so she won't get caught by pak — considered sehmat as his daughter!!!!!! and meghna gulzar literally assassination sehmat's character by cutting one MORE imp part .i.e sehmat followed the raw soilder's car and found their bunker and that's how she came back to india! ppl greeted her soooooo kindly in that bunker! she was welcomed with garlands! thar girl loved her nation sm she fell to her knees at the sight of Indian flag in india.

that woman revaled pak's planned attack on the INS Vikrant AND WAS THE MAJOR REASON FOR OUR VICTORY IN THAT WAR! everyone loved and adored her! respected her. it's WASN’T ANYTHING LIKE MEGHNA GULZAR POTRAYED AND GOD I'LL NEVER FORGET HER FOR RUINING SEHAMAT.

Something interesting to think about is how in Dhurandhar, people say yalina was used. But in Raazi, people say that sehmat had to give herself up. I'm talking strictly sexually.

Nobody talks about iqbal in raazi being used sexually for the ruse by sehmat or hamza having to "give himself up" the same way sehmat had to.

Feeds into the narrative that being intimate is not a big deal for men. Since they obviously want it na?🙄

Even if they did love their partners. It was ultimately for the country.

Rather it is to make discussions about fandoms and fandom culture a little more nuanced and inclusive.

I just recently saw a post reblogged by one of my favourite accounts asking why would people want to post about their fandoms anywhere except Tumblr and that 'It is Home' (again no hate to the account I love them and an ardent follower) and I replied to it (which you can see on my account).

But that post got me thinking about how much it matters where the media/people and fans are from to gague how well recieved it is on Tumblr. Because I have seen so so many fandoms around me which have almost nil people on Tumblr posting about it, whereas there are thriving communities on more conventional social media sites like reddit, instagram and even twitter.

I know I am repeating, but I gave an example of Women's Cricket and how the fandom only developed recently on Tumblr whereas I have seen (still active) accounts on instagram who post edits (both shipping and appreciation), form group chats and generally lead the fandom, and have done so since around 2015-16. And guess where most cricket fans originate from, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh..

And it is not just sports, it is movies, it is TV shows and artists and songwriters and singers and books and classics, all of which have almost no presence here on Tumblr but HUGE fandoms on other sites.

And what kinda irks me the most is how people want to watch/read/experience a specific trope and bemoan about how it doesn't exists and 'someone should write about it' WHEN IT DOES EXIST, Just not in your language in your country. Some of the biggest examples of this is that, I have seen so many posts about shipping a King and his most Trusted Advisor and so many times it is about how we don't have media about it, WHEN IT LITERALLY EXISTS FOR FREE ON YOUTUBE (Tenali Rama by Sony SAB).

I have also seen so many posts about people wanting an unhinged woman and a enabler man in media when it again exists in the form of Maa Kalli and Shiva (Shiva had to literally let Kalli dance on his chest to stop the unhinged killings by her). You want a 100% platonic bestie relationship between a man and a woman?? Krishna and Draupadi literally exist. A reverse harem?? Draupadi and the Pandavas

You want a 2 closeted people in a Lavender Marriage and a happy (and rainbow) ending?? 'Badhai do' literally exists.. You want a tragic romance where one partner is forced to kill another? Raazi is there (although it is hetrosexual).

Also it isn't just about your fandom, it is also about when you entered it, because I have seen maybe 2 accounts post about this show called 'Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon' (shoutout to @jalebi-weds-bluetooth I don't interact with you much but you have literally kept me afloat during my IPKKND phase) and guess what?? I have seen nearly 20+ good long fics about the same show (in fact I have found my MOM's fanfics about the same) on various different blogs/sites.. this is because, this show was at its peak in 2011-14 and at that time, phones or internet wasn't really common in India. Tumblr, even now, is a very very niche website here (I live in one of the most developed/modern cities and have met like 2 people irl, who have a blog).

This post was kinda sparked by one of the reblogs calling people who posted RPF on threads 'loosers' and that just made me think about what fandom actually meant to me. And I realised that fandom, at its core, is a way to form communities to find like minded people who enjoy the same/similar things as you do.

Calling Tumblr the Home of Fandom isn't just exclusionary for people who don't live in the Western World, but also to those who came even before Tumblr, those who found communities and kept them alive when their means of communication was limited to meeting irl or sending letters and telegrams.

To me, Fandoms are book clubs formed for Pride and Prejudice long before it was revealed that it was a woman who wrote it. Fandoms are my grandma and her sisters gossiping about the new Amitabh Bachchan/SRK movie and blushing when romance was mentioned. To me Fandom is making Playing 11s with my cousins, ribbing them when their teams loose. Fandom is me going to a book signing of this one author, alone and finding people all around me with the same interest. Fandom is me attending a concert of the singer who defined my tweens with my friends. Fandoms, to me, are communities. And these Communities have existed long before Tumblr, they exist in places where no one even knows what Tumblr is and will continue to exist even if/when Tumblr ceases to exist.
